Now we're getting into the study of SCUHA [pronounced: skoo-ha] (Self-Contained Underwater Heathing Apparatus).:)

You are taking heat that is concentrated inside of your body and moving it external to the body where it can be carried away much faster.
The difference is that your skin will feel warmer for a while, but your body will actually be losing much more heat.

The affects will be more fatigue, longer to regain core temperature and more risk to progressive hypothermia.

There is the sensation of cold, and the loss of body heat. Peeing in the wetsuit will help fight the sensation of cold, but you will actually lose more thermal energy from your body.

This is actually aggravated since our body responds to perceived cold by constricting blood vessels on the skin to reduce circulation (and heat loss). Urine in the wetsuit counteracts your bodies protection and increases the radiant heat loss from blood vessels. Blood vessels in the skin act very much like the capilaries in a vehicle radiator in this case.

Sometimes our brain takes over and does more to fight the perception of cold.

If i pee in MY wetsuit and warm up the water between me and the suit - this water gets trapped inside for a while with me - and helps keep the water in my suit warmer than the surroundings.

Interesting point about "fooling your body"

I am not saying it is some kind of self rescue when you are freezing to death! But it does usually keep me a little warmer on a cold dive.

I have never noticed getting colder than before I peed after the temporary warming effects wear off.

The water is only warm here in the summer and I dive all year round.

It gets down into the 50s and many divers here use drysuits when it gets like that but I find my 5mm bib and brace and a hood and some warming body fluids enough to keep me toasty!

:stupid:

I see what you mean - it doesn't seem like a good idea.

However, I doubt I will be able to resist the temptation....especially when I am narced!

thanks though - for pointing that out.

So here's my thoughts on the women's only section.

At first I was kind of ticked that there was a separate forum for women. I don't like being segregated due to my sex either. However, after reading some of the posts I have come to realize this:
-while I don't think it's necessary to separate women's issues, some women may feel more comfortable posting women's-related questions where there will be fewer men observing. It's better to get the question out there than to not ask it at all.
-some men may have been asked some questions by their wives/daughters/sisters etc. about women's issues and here is a place for him to ask it or search for it.
-it gives men who really don't want to know about anything related to women's physiology as related to diving, to avoid anything to do with the topic by staying out of the forum.

So, since coming to the above listed realizations about this forum, I say, keep it up!

Just my thoughts.

We have talked about "doing away with it" in the past.
However, there seems to be many concerns posted by women, that belong in a 'Women's forum'.
I wouldn't mind seeing the name changed from 'Women only' to 'Concerns for women'. Or something like that.
I would also like to see this forum grow to more women issues.
Most of the time I find what is posted in here, quite boring.
Can't us women talk about more interesting things then menstruation, and finding single men?

Like:

How do you without guilt handle diving on the weekends and still find time to be with the kids?

Keeping gear in the livingroom when the inlaws visit

Doing dishes or diving?

How to get our SO to learn to dive

anything else?

LoL Jenny.
Seems like you're on the right track. Can you think of anything else women can talk about?
Do agree mentruation, and finding a man has been talked out?

Partly agree only because I have been an active participent of the Finding a Single Male Diver thread! Not all is lost. There is interest between the single women and men!

Women's possible topics:
How to get somebody to clean the house while you go diving.

Does inhaling compressed air make you easier to live with?

Balancing work and diving

Why vacationing in Cancun is better than visiting the inlaws

Natasha - I agree that the forum should have a different name however, I haven't come up with any good suggestions yet. Your suggestion of "Concerns for Women" is good!

Yes, menstruation has been talked out! Let's move on! The finding a man thing, well, that's an ongoing issue with new ideas popping up. Let's keep that one somewhere in the background at least.

Scuba_jenny - no contest about diving or dishes, my sign-off says it all!! LOL
Housework is for when there is no diving to be done! Okay, I do some housework but I won't be having company over any time soon!! :D

I sense 2 new threads here:
1) possible new names for the Women Only section
2) top 10 reasons why women should dive

Pay them.

Without a doubt. I'm always happiest after diving.

Balancing work and diving

Work till you have enough money to dive....

Move to Cancun. The inlaw can come visit you.
