Really, I do NOT know what the "STROKE" thing is. Is it an acronym??

Its a GI3 thing (and GI3 is another thing to debate). Stroke refers to "ego stroking". Specifically it refers to relatively new cave divers who show up with a bunch of piss and vinegar and an ego and something to prove. They are out to set the new records, lay a bunch of virgin cave line, and have a vastly inflated opinon of themselves.

Here's a link to the article that popularized the term ...

http://www.dir.cy.net/stroke.htm

Note that it discusses nothing that is specific to DIR ...

Anyone else see the irony that most people's negative reaction to GUE/DIR divers is based on a perception of ego/attitude, yet one of the most controversial terms to come out of the DIR crowd is one which dictates staying away from such types?

So, The Word: "STROKE" appears to be a made up word that has no origin, but, that clearly has a definition attatched to it. (from reading the article)

...But all non-DIR people should be lumped together with the lowest demoninator of the sport...QUOTE]

Yeah, and not all DIR divers should be lumped together with the few jerks, BUT.....

I couldn't go through all the posts (too lazy...) so I'm not sure if this had been stated:

I've got nothing against DIR, but I think what riles people is the hidden implication that if you're not "doing it right" then you're doing the opposite, or doing it wrong.

Other than that, its all just ego and misunderstanding.

just my 0.02

there are a few jerks

mercifully, they are few

real DIR divers don't have **** to prove, they're that good (just for the record, i don't consider myself a DIR diver)

this was discussed earlier

why don't people get riled when PADI says it's "the way people learn to dive?"

does that imply that if you're not PADI you don't really know how to dive?

of course not, it's just a slogan

just like DIR is just a name ...

people are too insecure, i think

At least we can all agree that split fins are the best invention ever.
They are great, it's like getting 4 fins for the price of 2.
