yeah but we're real close idiots and dive a lot together

Sorry if that came across wrong. I realize you donate your primary but the argument by non-DIR people that it could allow the OOA person to get out of arms reach could be counter by saying you could donate your back up if the situation warranted. Going back to the more options explanation.

The thing is that you shouldn't need a short hose connecting you in order to not let the other diver get away from you.

Soggy:
Stop and think it through...under what circumstance would it be better to donate the bungee backup on a 22"-24" hose? Are there any circumstances you can think of where this would be necessary?

it would be extremely unlikely.

perhaps if the primary hose got entangled while OOA and you needed to switch to your secondy and buddy-breathe while disentangling the primary

or if the primary reg failed for some reason while on OOA, and you had to buddy-breathe with the secondary

again ... not likely

Depends on how hot the recipient is. :eyebrow:

The only situation that comes to mind is one where the OOA diver wanted to go to the surface and drag you with him. With a shorter hose he can get away and you can always reach his dump valves.

No, quite frankly, you are wrong.

You are ignoring the fact that you can grab ahold of a diver regardless of whether there is 7 ft of available hose or 3 ft. Additionally, if you don't want to go up with that diver, a quick yank on the long hose and you will rip it out of their mouth. They will either continue up on their panicky way, or come back to you. Either way, that part of the problem (getting dragged) is solved...that is, if you couldn't get ahold of them, which the length of the hose has no effect on.

Bottom line is, to be picky, this just plain isn't going to happen with two trained DIR divers who would have practiced long hose shares with an adequate rock bottom gas supply. This might be a potential situation if some random schmuck comes up to you and mugs you for your gas.

NWGratefulDiver:
Those rules are not unique to the DIR forum ...

Not relevant.
The topic is 'Why there is a prejudice against DIR". The answer is consistent with the question. Probably if you asked why there is a prejudice against solo diving someone might say that one of the reasons is the existence of that rule in the solo diving forum.

Sorry to bring the issue up, we're getting a little off topic.

If the other diver is bolting to the surface and kicking as hard as they can, its fairly useless. You are better off concentrating on exhaling and flaring and dumping yourself. There's no point in optimizing your gear for this situation, all you can hope is that their lungs don't pop and focus on making sure your lungs don't pop so that you don't wind up being a second fatility.

If the other diver simply loses control of buoyancy, you can manage that with a long hose. I've swum after a diver who was starting to cork 20 feet away from me and 5 feet up by the time I reacted and managed to grab them by the crotch D-ring and physically pulled them back down to 20 fsw... If you've got adrenalin being dumped into your system you will close the distance between the two of you *fast*.
