I reading this thread while eating some really nice grapes - and all of a sudden - I have to pee. :) I usually find that, in cold water, if I don't pee and I stay warmer. It is generally the dives where I pee that I get colder. Generally, however, I won't pee in rental gear and I won't pee towards the end of my dive. I figure that peeing earlier is better as it gives more time for "flushing" of the suit.

Very considerate!

I don't buy the "odor" myth. I've peed in my wetsuit literally thousands of times. It doesn't smell any better or worse than it ever did. It may be mentally "gross" to you to do so or use a rental suit, but I don't think there is anything to this idea that the wetsuit somehow absorbs it any more than it would absorb seawater.

Maybe you guys are peeing in 3mm shorties or something...

Peeing in a thick full wetsuit is not a good idea, sorry to play devil's advocate. I am surprised that so many people are supporting it here.

When you come up onto the boat or onto the beach and strip your top half of your suit down, you will smell like a puddle of piss on the floor in a public beach bathroom. That's disgusting, and how are you gonna rinse it on a boat? Everyone will just have to smell your piss.

If your wetsuit fits CORRECTLY, the pee will NOT flush out by the end of the dive. The water you initially trap against your body in the suit should STAY THERE, else your suit is not functioning properly. Peeing just adds to it.

When I'm surfing, I do pee in my wetsuit if I have to because since I am on the surface I can stretch out the neck part of my suit and do a manual flush, but getting chilled surfing is not nearly as dangerous as it is when you are diving. And here in SoCal when it's in the low 50's below the thermocline cracking your suit open is not an option. -tadd

I've never understood what all of the fuss is about re: peeing in wetsuits. After all, unless one has a urinary tract infection, urine is pretty close to being sterile.

Peeing in my suit is a safety issue indicator. For me, 2x is I am well hydrated, 1x is marginally hydrated and no pee means I am dehydrated and am going to feel like sh*& in an hour. Who need nitrox to feel good after a dive, I just need a liter of drinking water per dive.

I pee in my wet suit all the time, especially doing colder water diving. As soon as I hit that cold water I just have to go! I find that in warm water I have to pee much less often, interesting. There is a physiological reason & a term for having to pee when immersed but I forget what it is.
I always flush water through my wet suit at the end of dives by pulling my neck open a bit and allowing the water to work thorough before removing the wet suit. My wet suit does not smell any better or worse than anyone else's. Now I have seen people who do not flush the suit out or rinse it, then there is an odor problem until the suits and the people are washed ;-)
