I've never understood what all of the fuss is about re: peeing in wetsuits. After all, unless one has a urinary tract infection, urine is pretty close to being sterile.

Would you pee in your bath water while you're still soaking?

I just can't help myself.

I get chilled on long dives (one of the first actions the body takes when it gets cold is to get rid of excess liquids), AND I drink a lot of water. On a 1.5-2 hour SOCAL wetsuit dive, I probably pee 3 or 4 times on average.

MSilvia:
I've done that numerous times, and never found it to be unpleasant. It usually flushes okay by then end of a dive, and the rinse gets the rest of it. Just don't eat asparagus before diving.

Yikes. THAT could be bad :P

I agree. I've never smelled pee after a dive (7mm). I do generally let water in at the neck during my exit to try for a little manual flushing, though.

Peeing in a thick full wetsuit is not a good idea...

...getting chilled... is... dangerous... when you are diving.

Exactly why peeing, if you need to, is a good thing. Urine in your bladder is dead liquid that takes heat energy away from where it's needed (the rest of the body). That's why the cold-induced pee mechanism exists.

Why not. thats what the P-valve is for:D

Yeah, really. I pee in my drysuit all the time.

There's a safety advantage too. I'm always well hydrated, since I don't care if I have to take a leak during the dive.

In fact, not taking a leak is a reminder to drink more on the surface interval.

Excellent point.

:)

Hemlon:
Phew! Just kidding with you though.

As for the peeing in the bathwater comment - I think its entirely different set of scenarios - at least IMHO.

Okay, I should have stressed 'just don't do it in a drysuit – if you haven't got a P-valve fitted'... ;)

However, if you haven't don't do it... Once had a mate forget he was in a drysuit (he'd always used a semi-dry) and it didn't fit so well, so he did get a fair amount of water in anyway, and, well, nature took its course. We didn't unzip him till we'd driven the two-hours back home... :eyebrow: :eyebrow: :eyebrow:

Unfortunately, I'm female and can't use a p-valve in my drysuit. I didn't realize I was dehydrating myself until I slept all night after a 4 dive day. All you "older" ladies know exactly what I'm talking about :D

When I dive in the tropics, I use a 3 mil wetsuit and keep hydrated. OOOOOh, the comfort. :monkeydan

Pishing in wet-suits is wrong !! There's nothing worse than having some dirty b*****d come and sit next to you stinking of his own pish while you're trying to enjoy your lunch on the boat !!! I'm lucky enough to be able to dive in boardies and, thus, to pish to my heart's content without stinking the boat out !! :D

When you gotta go, you gotta go, but wow is there way too much info in this thread.

I mostly dive dry with a p-valve, so I have the best of both worlds- I can stay hydrated and I don't have to marinate in my own :censored: although it's a different story for anybody behind me.
