Give uspap a break. Maybe the claiming to be DIR guy on the boat was for real and he was just pointing out that the guy didn't know what HE was talking about. You guys are ruthless.....

I don't care if I was on the boat and he told you he was Jesus. It's a simple fact you for some reason don't get: DIR divers don't dive solo. That simple. I know, it can be tough learning all of this stuff on the internet. Hopefully that solo aspect is clear now. Having gear and self-labeling do not a DIR diver make.

Yes, the guy is not "DIR" if he dives solo, but the other "uspap" just reported what was said "I am DIR but I am going to dive solo" -- why should that make "uspap" the one that doesn't "get it"

Re-read what I posted. It's not an issue whether uspap should know better. But you can't post that DIR divers are rude because they do X, when you haven't actually witnessed such. If you want to comment on DIR divers, you have to actually know what the term means.

I was just commenting on the fact that a big chunk ot the thread is dedicated to showing that a lot of anti-DIR actually has nothing to do with DIR. (Most of it due to misinformation)

and then...it appears like magic. Another Anti-DIR post, attributing something to DIR, and to someone who isn't even remotely DIR.

I see the humor in this.

I have been watching all the DIR posting with interest for a few months. It's become obvious, to me at least, that there is a very vocal group of DIR posters that actually either have no formal training or have not done any post training dives with experienced DIR divers. I’ve met and dove with countless DIR divers and instructors and almost all were very friendly and not militant at all, despite the heated conversations that go on here.

The reality of DIR diving is much different than what had been portrayed. In reality very few DIR divers are as regimented or strict as what is often described here.

When I do tech or cave diving, I’m configured 95% DIR, as is most everyone else, and have never had complaints or had other DIR divers refuse to dive with me. I (we) are usually just thankful to have someone of similar mindset to dive with. (I once had a group of cave divers grill me about my experience before letting me dive with them, but they were not GUE.)

Just so you know, my deviations from strict DIR are that I wear my instruments on different wrists than what’s recommended simply for practical reasons. I have also began holding the primary light in my right hand because it makes more sense than having to constantly untangle it from the primary hose. (I don’t scooter.) Almost every DIR diver I’ve dove with has some minor modification from the strict version of DIR, it’s just accepted.

I do pickup dives frequently and in order to have the most diving options, I dive with the DIR crowd, and despite being DIR, I also dive with non-DIR divers as long as I don’t believe there is a safety issue. I feel that diving with a diverse group has helped improve my skills not weaken them.
