Or, is it that DIR is a special "no trolling zone" where fines are doubled?

I'm mystified....

I never cease to be amazed at the things that I obviously don't have enough information about to properly understand....

It's true I do know something about trolling. The problem as I see it is this:

1. Some people [we'll call them "engineers"] use words only to transmit information. They don't like banter or kidding. It's a misuse of a tool. They tend to be literal...they are offended by the use of metaphors. They're easily insulted.
2. Some people [we'll call them "lawyers"] use words and language for fun.
They entertain themselves and each other with banter and kidding. They don't take it seriously and it's difficult to insult them. To them words are just words. Gone and forgotten in an instant.

Diving is a technical sport. It attracts engineers and a few lawyers. The engineers get insulted by the lawyers and call it 'trolling'. Lawyers find DIR and 100% tech talk boring. So, free speech or controlled speach?

I'm not sure that there's a more accurate statement than this...well, maybe if it if it came from Jep, but this is certainly up there.

You didn't with any of my "geek" friends...yes, we use words (lots of acronyms man) and numbers (somtimes even symbols...b/c symbols are just cool) to communicate...but we're pretty good at forgetting everything we say (especially after a keg or two). You just didn't hang out with the right engineers. :D

yeah...it's beyond their realm of interest...no loopholes, and real work is sometimes required...

Hence the problem. DIR types can come around to any forum and post their views, but other people cant go into DIR forum and post their views. Very unfortunate.
I have a feeling the same set of guidelines would be laid out into a "PADI Instructor's Forum"...it isn't exclusive...

Is that why lawyers are always twisting words around to suit their own needs?

Genesis:
I think it speaks volumes that a particular group of divers, and a particular diving style must be protected from people "questioning" (some would call that "attacking") it..... but of course its all ok if other diving styles are agencies are bashed/attacked/questioned.

Specifically, it speaks to the fragility of the claimed "system" or "dogma" when one must protect it against inquiry - even virulent inquiry.

How ridiculous... If you have a serious question about DIR, ask it in the DIR forum. If you want to know why they do something a certain way, ask, I'm sure you'll get plenty of replies. Don't go into the forum trying to convert some part of the system, they've adopted it and believe in it, your loudmouth posts won't overturn years of training and practice.

The forum is not for DIR-only divers, it's DIR-only discussion. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

You know now that you mention it... it's pretty unfortunate that non-instructors can't get into the instructor forum but all the instructors have access to the other forums.

Having had you on our dive boat for a couple of days, I know that you are quite serious about your "debating". As you said, not all technical types enjoy that kind of "activity".

I am not (nor ever will be) one of the biggest fan of unreasonable divers out there (DIR or not). I DO take things said to me at face value. I just excused my self in the Great Lakes forums for not recognizing when someone was kidding. I got teased back. That is cool.

The poster who stated the same question two different ways had it right. One incites emotions (which a lawyer would use against his opponent in court). The other invites civil discussion. Personally, I prefer civil discussion. I agree with the poster that the DIR forum is great for keeping some of the more "zealous" DIR people in their corner. I have seen less interference on threads in BSD and equipment when someone asks about computers, split fins, "recreational BC's" and the like. The least I can do is to leave the more "zealous" DIR people to discuss their system until they realize that everybody has something to contribute (Yes, even Lawman, LOL) with minimal interference.

The vast majority of the GUE/DIR crowd already realizes this. It is just the ones that don't that really can make life miserable for the posters on this board. We don't need the trolls bringing them out! It takes two sides to start a flame war. Let's try not to be the iniatiators!

BTW, that has to be one of Lawman's more accurate statements. Not all of us get offended easily, but he is right about words not meaning as much to a troll!
