Or, is it that DIR is a special "no trolling zone" where fines are doubled?

I'm mystified....

I never cease to be amazed at the things that I obviously don't have enough information about to properly understand....

Genesis:
One man's troll is another's honest question.

No, no person's honest question can easily trip another's overly sensative troll radar, but it should quickly become clear that it was a false alarm.

genesis:
This is a "rule" that appears to be massively subject to abuse at the 'discretion' of a particular band of zealots to silence honest debate - or criticism.

Big surprise eh? After all, it is the DIR forum, and one of the founding principles of "doing it wright" is that you cannot question what is pronounced from on high!

Hey Karl, can I have that olive branch back so I can beat you with it?

Genesis:
The problem with this is that one person's troll is another's honest question or opinion.

Only with a view into someone's mind can you be certain what they were intending.....

Jurys attempt to do so every day.

The reality is its impossible to tell a kool-aid drinker *OR* a stroke that they are wrong.

So bother trying anymore? Let the DIR folks have their place to have a serious discussion, and if you don't like DIR, then leave them alone. I would seriously hope that they would show the same respect for some guy asking about non-DIR topics such as split fins and spare airs, but I won't be holding my breath.

Split fins : yes...
Spare Airs : no...

I am really dissapointed in this thread. Trolling is not just limited to DIR, split fins, or "poodle jackets"/backplates. Just about every thread can be trolled, but we all know certain topics are off-limits on the basic of just being a decent person. Topics like, accidents, personal anguish for numerous reasons, and other certain life events really fall out of the realm of trolling. That is a major no-no and anyone who partakes in that is just an idiot.

Now, all the less serious topics like any piece of equipment, trip destinations, methodologies, posts where members get on their 'high' horse...my personal favorite to troll....etc are all within the limits of a decent troll.

Now lets look at the basic troll.....posting to incite a response. It is the person who responds to the troll that is just as much to blame as the troll. By responding, you are in fact pooring gasoline on a fire which then makes the troll feel like he/she accomplished the goal. Why respond to a troll? On the flip side, why troll?

Trolling helps the community think and further helps board members realize why they support their own opinions. When you respond to a troll in a negative manner you are letting that troll know that you support your posting with pride, desire to be heard and respected. Although the troll will further feed on your pride, you should feel better that you have the courage to respond.

It is this response that lets you know you are for real.

Trolls help our members be better people.

Which is impossible once the person has been banned, of course. Its called self-validation and it appears to be alive and well.

I already ate all the olives.

For the record:
While the DIR forum is restricted to discussions of DIR topics neither DIR posters nor DIR posts are restricted to the DIR forum.

This is the way it is folks:
1) No trolling! This is not the place for agency bashing! This is especially not a place for bashing DIR divers.

2) This forum is for a free exchange of ideas concerning DIR, but it is NOT intended to limit any mention of DIR to only this forum. There are many things pertaining to DIR that will be discussed in other forums as well.

Hence the problem. DIR types can come around to any forum and post their views, but other people cant go into DIR forum and post their views. Very unfortunate.

Only for you.

I think you're over reacting.

I hope they were rotten! wink

Uncle Pug:
... in all forums except DIR... it is just that in order to start a DIR forum we needed to ensure that it didn't just degenerate into a flame fest since as you no doubt know DIR is a very controversial subject.

The only reason that this is an issue is because the majority of DIR divers fail to rein in the new converts that are still blinded by the light. The light is having a book and training class that instantly propels them beyond the divers that have dived for years. If you read the book, if you buy the right equipment, you know how to “do it right.” Despite the fact that how to “do it right” has changed over the few short years I’ve been involved in SCUBA.

IMO if DIR was such a superior diving system it wouldn’t need such protectionist measures. In fact it doesn’t on other boards such as the deco stop.

Who decides what’s a troll post?

Mike
