Another thing to consider as far as the number of shops is the cost to open one. ntil recently it would have been much much less expenive to do so on Roatan, then add that there are still some hostel type places where all the starving DM's and OWSI's can stay.

I spent about 10 minutes doing searches and came up with these. There are tons more as places like Cozumel have 60+ different dive ops, but this should give you an idea. Lots of dive training going on at EVER dive destination, not just Roatan. I would bet that Cozumel does 10x as many certifications from OW - Rescue.

I came to the Bay Islands six years ago, planning on doing a couple of days diving before carrying on travelling throughCentral America, but the lifestyle had me hooked almost immediately and I see the same thing happening to others on a weekly basis. It is the desire to stay a round for a little longer that causes many people to take course after course.

The Bay Islands have had a reputation as the cheapest place to learn to dive form may years. Guide books such as Lonely planet often seem to create self fulfilling prophecies and astute dive shop owners recognise this.

Basically the shops have figured out what their customers want and provide/market it. The conditions for dive training are great, its usually calm, clear and warm. The Bay Islands are easily accessible from the US with short direct flights from Houston and Atlanta, making it preferable to the other large training regions in Asia, mainly Thailand.

The Bay islands also cater to those who are certified and want to do a dive trip without training. Most dive operations separate student divers and certified diver with careful boat scheduling and multiple boats.

What really seems to stand out about places like the Bay Islands and Thailand is the fact that diving is a lifestyle choice for many of the people there. It really is possible to have a rewarding career in diving and these places are probably one of the best examples of that. You don't just dive with your diveshop, they are a family, social events tend to center around the dive operation you are affiliated with, giving many people the ideal long or short vacation with an instant social network and plenty of activities to chose from, we often also go wakeboarding and fishing with our customers as well as having 2-3 cookouts a week. Unlike many vacations i have had where i felt like a stranger in a strange town, the day I arrived in Roatan it felt like home. Taking dive courses allowed me to turn it into my home.

Roatan and Utila are well known to students around the world traveling on tight budgets. Travelers hiking in Central American often take a side to trip to one of these locations. The schools on both islands cater to these students and wanna be dive professionals looking to become a DM or OWSI on the cheap. I spent 2 months on Utila becoming an OWSI and about 75% of the trainees for OW, Advanced and Rescue were non American students. Most schools have at least one instructor that speaks a foreign language.

I personally investigated schools in Thailand and Utila because the cost were so low. I could get quality training for less money than training in the US and have a great time while living on a tropical island instead of some US city. I was one of Roatanman's exceptions. I was 62 years old when I trained with the "kids" on Utila. I loved every minute of it. 42 students sat for the exam and and most were under 20 years of age and many were non American. During my training I never saw a student over 20 years of age and none were American. All had traveled in Central America before arriving in Utila.

While training is offered in many other locations as indicated by the obvious research done by Robint, the number of takers in most places is very limited and most are "older" adults. Most charge substantially more than Utila or Roatan. Nearly all dive operations around the world run by an OWSI offer classes. That doesn't mean they teach many however.

Roatan and Utila and cheap by comparison to other Caribbean locations and I think that's the reason diver education being so prevelant and available. Other may advertise training but these places actually do more than most "nearby" areas.

Thanks, I knew I wasn't crazy. The unusually high amount of advertising by the dive shops in Roatan for training really stood out to me.

There is a Specialty Patch for that.

There is a Specialty Patch for that.

Isn't there a specialty patch for just about anything these days? I was all set to offer underwater naturalist until I realized it was "naturalist" and NOT "naturist" I guess I will have to submit my own outline for approval.
