Why does Dive Rite recommend braided hoses?

Sloth, everything you have heard pro and con about braided hoses is true. And of course, they are more colorful and sexier than black rubber, and isn't SCUBA all about colorful and sexy first?

Seriously, though, when my damn-near-new Conshelf regulator's black rubber hose started to leak, pinhole leaks from the "dots" in the rubber tubing all along its length, I was rather upset. The story I was told is that those dots were in the molding so the hose would start to leak that way, rather than burst if defective. Sure. Point being it was still premium brand-name black rubber hose, and it developed leaks even in the first season of use.

Any gear can fail. The braided hoses are colorful and less bulky and it is probably easier to keep a spare one of them (properly sealed and dry) on hand. But either one will do to get you started. In the overall scheme of things, hoses (and don't forget the o-rings) aren't that expensive.
