Jumping back into Scubaboard after a long gap....

It began for me years earlier when I first snorkeled. I could not believe what I saw under the water at Laguna Beach, CA. The water happened to be clear that day, I guess! Anyway, the thought I could "linger" there with SCUBA gear was an amazing thing. Never got tired of it and will continue as long as I am physically able to do so. Its the closest thing to space flight most of us will ever experience. Truly a privilege.

I grew up in Monterey, California. I've always been involved in beach/ocean related hobbies, so I always wanted to learn to dive. I had bad ears though, so I didn't think I could. My school research is in marine biology, and everyone in my lab can dive except for me. So FINALLY I went to an ear specialist who did the right tests and gave me the green light (with caution). I am completely hooked so far. I can't imagine giving it up now, unless I have a medical issue.

Thanks everyone for responding, as for me it is probably all the amazing pictures i have seen of underwater life, which at first looked alien. I was qualified in a gravel pit in england (Vobster Quay- Know it?) and first dived abroad in zanzibar. everything i saw made my heart pound, and i now want to become a marine biologist.

Keep the posts coming! :)

I started scuba diving because I received a certification course as a gift from my wife. She thought I should get into it because at the time I didn't take off much time for vacations as a self employed attorney. I fell in love with diving immediately, and have been an active diver since I was certified in 1998. We went from taking a one week trip every three or four years to taking 2 to 4 trips every year! I received my professional credential in 2000, and my wife joined me as a diver in 2002, and the rest in history. We continue in diving because it is an exhilarating thing to do, we love every dive and the people we meet and the places we go. Diving is a shared passion. We travel together, dive together, talk about diving together and write about diving together. We make public appearances and talk about diving together. ( See book and media reviews, "The Scuba Snobs Guide to Diving Etiquette".) Catch us at the Colorado Dive Show later this month. Our only regret is that we didn't get into the sport 30 years earlier. Of course, back them the equipment wasn't as good and the training was a bit more boot-camp style.
