It may appear that some folks get annoyed or defensive ...
You appear to be annoyed.

Asking for a safe space for gue divers of all people sounds a bit overly sensitive. People are clicking on this for it entertainment value. Nobody in their right mind takes some report for face value and makes up their opinion up based upon this. Lighten up, it's funny. It's not an actual cult just kinda like one.

I dunno man but he's got A LOT of mileage out to this course complaint for decades now.

Wait Doc Harry is Dave Sutton? Who knew! ^.^

People love to be a victim, in this case for decades
If only he’d written a book about it when it happened 10 years ago he’d probably have sold a few copies by now…

Were GUE instructors independent back then? My payment for fundamentals last year went directly to my instructor. I only paid a registration fee to GUE. So I doubt GUE would reimburse. However, GUE should have at least responded and then taken action against that instructor.

GUE instructors are all independent and are not paid through GUE. There isn't a single scuba agency which is in the business of hiring and paying instructors as employees - that would be a nightmare of conflicting employment regulations, immigration status, work authorizations, and taxes.

First gue is not some huge corporation sitting around searching the internet for things pertaining to them. Gue is a small little office next to a dive shop. Secondly they likely have no clue as to this thread existing.

I do think this forum should be restricted like it used to be.

I sent GUE a detailed letter back when this happened. GUE knows what happened but they never responded. The instructor kept teaching for years afterwards. That proves GUE approved of that behavior.

It wouldn't be a big to me if this happened on the other side of town. But it didn't. I spent thousands to dollars in travel to attend two GUE classes.

Like I said before, I was attracted to GUE because of their basic philosophy. Even in my first week of PADI OW, I knew I wanted a different path before I knew there was actually a different path.

Too bad GUE blew it.

Restrict this forum? So like-minded fanatics can brag about how superior they are to everyone else?

No annoyance. Simply making a counterpoint.
In case you weren't aware this subforum used to be locked and you needed approval. You didn't have to prove anything, just sign up for it and you'd get approval. Anybody even then could sign up for it. But the fact that there was a step required in order to post seemed to be a gateway to keep uninformed people out. I signed up years before I ever had gue training because I was interested in the DIR philosophy. It was a good place to come to get questions answered. Once the new site went up this subforum became open for everyone. The problem is now people see it on the list of new thread replies and just come comment. Some of those people don't even realize they're in the dir subforum. More importantly what's happened is people come ask a serious question but then get misinformation from people who actually have no gue training or dir experience.

So I stand by my stance. This has been a good, civil discussion, but really belongs in the basic or advanced diving forum instead. More people who are new to diving are more likely to see it there. And a closed dir forum would allow people with real interest to learn more.

and doc harry's story would've never been against the rules back then. I guess lamont left and Lynne passed away so the forum was left with no moderators. i duno

I still maintain that this forum shouldn’t be opt-in only.

My only concern is that we have people without dir/GUE Training talking about what dir/GUE does, like they’re some kind of authority on it despite no real knowledge or experience. That’s not good.
