DIR- GUE Why are non-GUE divers so interested in what GUE does?

You probably aren't going to get invited on a GUE Seattle charter then, problem solved for everyone.

So if you were diving with your other half (...don't know your domestic situation, but take it as an example) and they had a problem, you'd ignore them because you were both diving solo?

How about they don't need to be bothered to rescue "me" because I'm diving with a self-sufficient solo attitude with the right kit and sufficient bailout to not need their help should there be problems?

Or starting the dive with an honest discussion that they need to be able to rescue themselves and not get into a problem rather than relying on their "buddy" for help? They can bring their personal divemaster for that.

But in more challenging dives, "solo" is saying that they're all competent in the art of not getting into a mess and being competent about getting out of it alone. And then you've a team of competent people who can dive together without relying on each other but who can help in extremis.

Of course you want to dive with competent people, and of course you can get yourself out of trouble if you need to. You seem to confuse "functioning as a team" with "needing a team as a crutch". There are activities that work better functioning as a team in the complete absence of problems - cave survey, shooting video, etc.

And as soon as you say "who can help in extremis", then you are in fact diving in a team, you just have a different boundary on where you might bother to assist.

I value every dive and don’t do unpaid DiveMaster — haven’t many years left to dive. Happy to dive with others but not novices nor needy people, unless I choose to of course.

UK wreck diving is generally in lowish visibility. Sticking with buddies requires a lot of effort as separation is the norm, thus self sufficiency is critical. Your diving circumstances may be different.

I think a better way of describing it is: Generally, every dive I do is a self reliant dive whether or not I'am diving with others.

At least, that's how I regard my diving. Don't care if I dive alone or with a team of two others. I rely on myself to stay safe. A good buddy or team can provide assistance when I need it, but I do not rely on them.

Part of what you learn in a GUE course is that, alongside your buddy having a spare computer on their wrist, a spare tank of deco gas, and a spare couple of lights on their harness, they also have another brain from you and can look at things from another perspective

You get plenty of chances in a course to experience the tunnel vision that comes when task loaded, having someone else there looking from the outside can stop bad decisions from happening.

You could also do that for someone else if you were in that same mindset of being a teammate and maintaining situational awareness.

I never feel that I'm "relying" on my buddies when we're on a dive, and I'd say its alot more enjoyable when you're with a well practiced team mate, whether something goes wrong or not

This is self-reliance, not solo diving. Solo means "without a buddy," not self-reliant.

Feel free to call it differently if you want, but then we will never understand each other
