Several anglers out here have seen great whites or large makos take sea lions close to shore, as well as the occasional giant sea bass. Although I've never seen it in process, I've observed the end result a number of times while out on the dive boat... floating carcasses with major parts missing and even one juvenile with a large fresh bite that came up to me at a dive site for protection (gulp)... or even in town when sea lions with missing body parts have come ashore to die. Fortunately in 45 years of diving here in Catalina, I've never seen a diver in that state!
