Stop Think Act Breathe, and remember you have a Buddy

Just for the record - but I assume you were just joking - it's actually Stop Breathe Think Act and it's actually important that it is that sequence, none other. Stop is to not get yourself deeper into trouble. Breathe is to regain your composure. Only then can you think and act. It's a little mantra against panic attacks, there are interesting reports about it saving people's lives (one from an entrapped cave diver in Australia). It works.

Here is one drill that comes to mind.

One of the most critical situations in diving is the beginning of what could become an uncontrolled ascent, because it is an unstable, self reinforcing situation. How about Exhale - Deflate - Control ... ?

Exhale buys you the first moment of time to find your dump-valve; but it also makes you less prone to barotrauma. Deflate (or Dump) is obvious. But you also need to regain control: figure out what went wrong (poor skills or inflator failure?) and respond appropriately.
