I have found, when needed, the simple trilobyte to be the best tool for slicing through kelp.

Either your local kelp stems are noticeably thinner than ours, or your trilobite has a much larger gap than mine.

I'd never be able to slice a kelp stalk with my trilobite in my local waters.

Looking at the pole results I'm surprised at the number that actually use the knife though seldom.

Do you have the thick bull kelp, I presume? California Channel Islands has elk kelp and giant kelp- both of which are easy to snap with hands or get a trilobyte through.

There was no option, for "carry always, use often" or "carry always, use 50% of the time"

I have a nicer Benchmade H20 but on my January trip to Mexico I used my cheap simple Aqualung Squeeze that's always on my BCD to free some critters from an illegal long line.

Five divers, two of whom were instructors, and I as the only one with a knife.

I thought knifes were banned in Mexico.

Here in Queensland, a cutting device is mandatory.
I usually use it to cut fishlines...
