Ok, what's the deal with these guys? We used to really like Papa Hog's, but now I'm not so sure.

My wife and I dove with them 4 times before, and used to enjoy the experience. The divemasters were laid back, funny, and generally a happy bunch. They were glad to point out things to us, and seemed to want us to have a good time. The last time we dove with them was not too long after the big hurricane (Wilma?) that really messed up the island. Although their operation was in full swing, and things were basically back to normal, they seemed like a different bunch. Most of the staff had gone to other dive operations, including all of our favorite people. I heard stories of strife between the staff and the management. The new staff were basically just going through the motions, providing the minimum required service. We dove the same damn sites almost every day. The boat captains were not unfriendly, but they clearly weren't enjoying dealing with us. Overall, it was not exactly a bad experience, but not nearly what it used to be. Could anybody please provide some insight, and perhaps confirm or deny if this is still the case?

I'd also really appreciate suggestions about good alternative operations. I read a bunch of other posts, but most were pretty old, and I didn't really get what I was looking for. We are fairly particular about what we want:

  • small (6-pack) boats
  • access to shore dives
  • laid-back/fun divemasters
  • willing to listen to suggestions on dive sites
  • not overbearing/control freak divemasters :no
  • long bottom times (assuming our group aren't noobs)
  • snacks or water for SI would be nice

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Check out Blue Angel Dive Shop /Caribe Blu Hotel just up the road from Papa Hogs. Small six packs with good DMs. We usually try to get on Jorge's boat, although he's usually in high demand. Mostly lets the divers choose the sites. Once they see you know you're stuff, they let you just do your dive. No snacks, but always water. Shore diving - although not quite what it was before Wilma. The hotel/dive shop does some real good package deals. No idea what's up with Papa Hogs, haven't used them for a few years - since we found the Blue Angel/Caribe Blu packages.

Raul is an awesome guy that listens to you and dives whatever it is that you want. No dive site is out of the way for him. He does provide some killer snacks too on the SI. Also, if you are doing multiple dives with him, he will take your gear, clean it, and have it all ready to go the next day on the boat. Top notch IMO

Papa Hogs is the one and only shop I've ever deal with in Cozumel so I'm not sure how they compare to others. I do know this...when we have gone in a group, they have always been very good to everyone in the group. And when we had a serious problem unrelated to the dives, they really stepped up to help. But the one and only time I was there without a large group, it was totally different. The owners were great as usual but the treatment from the divemasters and quality of the overall dive experience was much less than on previous trips with the same guys. I was very disappointed in that. I know there will be a few questions I ask before booking next time. I sincerely hope it was a fluke because I really like the owners.

With all due respect, the OP's question is specifically about one operation. Let's not hijack the thread with plugs for our favorite other ops, OK?

Papa Hogs was one of several Ops I tried before Blue Angel; they were okay, but not at all impressive - but that was years ago, hard to say how much they may have changed. I dived off of their big, slow boat with a group then an afternoon dive off of a tiny boat with no shade. No real problems, just little to like.

Coz Marine Park rules require a DM to dive with no more than 8 per DM, so you don't really see 6-pack boats; the small ones are more likely to be 8 customer boats like Blue Angels - which I would describe as no frills, no head boats yet with everything I want except maybe a camera bucket. So I'll carry a collapsable, six-pack cooler than will hold water next time to keep my camera wet between dives.

Edit...
Sorry Gordon, I was posting as you were. Don't mean to plug another so much as to compare with what I do like.

But he did ask what other ops were good since he seemed to be disheartened with papa hogs

Oops, sorry, I missed that point. As you were... ;^)

Enter my plugs for Blue Angel and BlueXTSea, then.
