That's a good one, TDI requireing PADI courses.
...when I pressed them on it they said it was a shop policy because they want to make sure people are comfortable in those environments first.

Also paddle fins instead of splits since Apollo were the only ones making them at the time and they didn't carry them.

I recommend you immediately send them a thankyou note. Did they teach good finning technique also? Well, sound like you eventually got the splits so I guess they didn't. If your a split fin fan I've got a deal for you. I have a bunch that I've never been able to sell. We teach divers what to do with their feet and then they won't buy the split fins.

I think that I have been fairly lucky. I only go into the lds when I need something, and I go in, get it and leave. I get tanks filled at school. Sounds like you guys have had to put up with a lot of crap and I don't know if I am ready to deal with it. :D =-) :D

Tried to sell: Jacket BCs

Sold: Oceanic Bivu mask (angled panes at the bottom...why did I think that was a good idea?)

My LDS has never tried to sell me anything. They answer questions about products, but have never actually tried to get me to buy anything.

Well, actually... the other day they tried to get me to buy one of those neoprene mask strap covers with a picture of a naked woman on it, and I almost did, but decided against it.

But that was the only time! :out:

That's not to say that I haven't made a few stupid purchases of my own, though... like:

SeaQuest AirSource
One of those stupid little plastic things shaped like a mouthpiece that are supposed to hold your octopus.
One of those little battery powered "light sticks" for night diving.

They even discouraged me when I was eyeballing a spare-air (back when I was a newbie). Kind of made me wonder why they even carried the thing.

I have heard the owner recommend the dry-snorkel to a few people, though. So they're not perfect. A few things do fall through the cracks. :out:

They've been really great. Unfortunately, they are the type of shop that sells jacket bc's and split fins, so I think my purchases through them are going to get fewer and farther between.

Hey, I know what you need... it is one of those underwater slates that you can erase like an esher sketch (sp?). and make sure your mask and fins are the same color.
Eric

Oh, thanks for reminding me.

Yes, I admit it.

I bought one of those etch-a-sketch slates.

And yes, it matched my fins.

-hangs head in shame- :dork:

They instructors tried to feed me that when I got certified. Its a load of crap. I used paddle fins once and never again. When I first started I found a lot of old timers like you. The younger divers with borrow my fins and ask me where they could buy some. It's just like when I started snowboarding with all the skiers complaining about me ruining the mountain.
Split fins are the best thing to happen to scuba in 20 years.

What's better about them?

Ouch, Old Guys??? Don't you mean wise and experienced?

Split fins, maybe if you are only diving in warm water and you don't have to push much through the water. Oh and try doing a frog kick with them.
