What's the deal with the "Advanced Nitrox" certification?

TDI standards do not state a specific number of deco bottles a student must carry (except to say that students must carry one and be able to do a gas switch). I have students carry one bottle in Adv. Nitrox/Deco for several reasons. The chief reason is that a second deco gas adds no benefit for the profiles we're diving in the Great Lakes (max. depth 150' for 20-25 minutes). Aside from that, carrying even one bottle can represent significant task loading to someone who's never done it before (you have to walk before you can run).

Yep..... it is a course designed to either be used for already O/W OC certed divers or for non OC certed divers....the basics of OC are taught in addition to the basic recreational CCR.

I'm familiar with both GUE's "Getting Clear on the Basics" (Getting Clear on the Basics: The Fundamentals of Technical Diving - PDF | Global Underwater Explorers) and the IANTD "Tek Lite" (Tek Lite Training Manual - £30.00 : IANTD UK, The Leaders in Diver Education) which will likely accompany Rec Trimix.
My impression is that they're both pretty decent books, while IANTD's offering goes much more in depth into physiology, etc., and GUE's focus is more procedural (especially with regards to dive planning).
That said, don't look to either to answer the kinds of questions you've been posting in the DIR section
So who offers this course? Any idea of instructors or dive facilities who are doing this?
Dave.... IANTD is the agency....indv. instructors or dive shops I have no clue. I had posed the question to several folks that are very involved as you in CCR diving as a fact finding mission of mine for a buddy whom had asked me if it were possible (I did not have the answer for him at that time so I did a bit of investigating).....I was referred to this agencies course and the course standard. I would guess like everything else in mainstream diving 'someone' is teaching under this situation when it comes up. If you go to the IANTD Standards you will find the course description.
I saw Matt's reply to you on RBW. I will be interested in his opinion of this. I believe it was ANDI Asia that trained some OW divers on Draeger Dolphin but I have yet to have any first hand knowledge of a CCR OW course actually happening. Thanks for your reply.
NAUI offers a Helitrox class, too, because that's the card I got 
I'm a little nonplussed at the idea that someone who wants to keep her END at 80 to 100 feet may not be a candidate for technical diving at all. None of my instructors seems to feel that way -- but of course, I have chosen instructors who feel that early introduction of helium mixes is appropriate. They have had OTHER concerns about me proceeding to tech diving, but my intolerance of nitrogen narcosis wasn't one of them.
Paying $36 for a set of doubles with 25/25 in them may seem excessive to other people. But I can afford it, and I'd rather do twenty minutes at depth and remember them, than spend less on Nitrox and come up wondering what it was I just did.
