yes, a drysuit hood is just a hood without a skirt. most people tuck wetsuit hoods in their wetsuits at the neck, under the zipper, and you can't do that with a drysuit. at best you'd have an extra frill flopping loose & doing not very much around your neck, and at worst it would rub or grab your drysuit seal and make it leak. well, i guess really at worst it would tear your seal, but i don't see that happening.
so get whatever you like!
+1 on the making your jaw sore. i use a beanie (pink, with a tiara and jewels) for backmount because it's more comfy, but i'm worried the sidemount helmet would be uncomfy pressing the jewels into my skull, so i went back to the hood for that.
