I was diving at haighs quarry with 15 lbs of weight(including bp). Had a 6.5 mil shorty on. With full inflated I could get half of my head above water. Typically I dive with 13 when I rent the jacket style, so I guess those 2 extra lbs threw me off?

Maybe I lost some fat and need to recheck my weight... it's possible but not likely.

What type of tank were you using?

Something does not sound right... with a 6.5 mil shorty (maybe 10-12 lbs of lift?) and 15 pounds of ballast weight total, plus a full tank with regulator maybe 6-8 lbs negative... 12 - (15 + 8) = -11 lbs..... you should not have been more than 11 pounds negative at the surface (and actually you should be less negative than that at the surface if properly weighted) .

A typical singles wing should provide plenty (excess) lift at the surface, unless it is not able to fully inflate.

Best wishes.

And you accounted fro BP being 6 lbs negative? or was that 15lbs on top of that?

I would start with 6lbs + BP...

6 lbs from the plate and then additional 9 on my wt belt.

so 15 total weight on me

15 lbs from the plate and weight belt, another 2 from your reg and a full C100 is about -8. That makes your rig about -25 lbs....if you were not using a STA. A weighted STA can be another 4-6 lbs.

With a rig that's potentially ~-30 lbs (full cylinder), -22 lbs (empty tank) and a 6.5 shorty you may have been as much as 10-14 lbs over weighted in fresh water.

I dive a Apex back plate and wing with a single tank adapter, the wing has 32lb of lift. I dive a 4mm compressed neoprene dry suit, thick fleece under suit and need a total of 26lb to be neutrally buoyant. My weighting is 6lb from back plate and STA and an additional 20lb in my weight harness. I have no problems on the surface keeping my face clear of the water. My suit dump valve would be fully open using just the wing. The tank is a 12 liter steel faber.

no STA...

I'll have to try and find a pool to go testing my weight then.

With a bp/w you need even less weight than with a regular bcd so I'm not sure why you needed 15 lbs. I would recommend that you check out your weighting again as the others have mentioned.

Although, some of the guys need a bit more lift, 40 should be more than enough.

Thought I needed the same amount of weight no matter the bcdI wore...now I know other wise and knowing is half the battle. yo joe

A regular bcd has a lot of extra lift, a bp/w only has a wing...

The straps won't make much difference, the plate will surely sink so that leaves the wing which is at most 1 lbs buoyant if at all.

My whole oxycheq wing/setup won't float by itself LOL!

I suggest that you try 4 lbs less n see how it goes.

Even if you should go the 40lbs route, the 40 mach v wing is really streamline.
