Actually, wreck line is #36, cave line is #24. But of course, wreck divers always have to go with the bigger sizes... ;)

I've always just melted the ends, never used super glue, and haven't had an issue with the line coming undone. Wait, though, it'll happen this week now... :D

Nylon ties from any hardware store work extremely well instead of cave line for that.

be careful the zip ties have a nylon not metal pawl. in my experience the metal ones will corrode and the tie will eventually come loose - invariable at the worst possible time

Tobin,

Something good to do after you tie on your bolt snaps with nylon line is to get some super glue and put a dab or two directly on the knot. Also, make three wraps of the cave line around the bolt snap. Gluing the knot is better than just the knot itself, and it well never come undone unless you cut it. Also, I straongly recommend against nylon zip ties. They tend to pull out and come apart.

a frapping turn around the loops through the bolt snap really help get a nice tight permanent lashing.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll have to try that next time I set one up. Most of the time I can get them pretty tight without the frap, but that should help tighten it if needed.

I was going to cut off a bit from my big OMS reel and use that line, but I started wondering what "cave line" was,

Probably if you have an OMS primary reel then you have about 300ft of #24 cave line already ;)

I've finally picked up the hoses I wanted to get my new double's regs all setup, and was about to tie off my bolt snaps and get everything underway. I was going to cut off a bit from my big OMS reel and use that line, but I started wondering what "cave line" was, and if there is any reason I can't go to a hardware store and pick up 3/16" or 1/8" nylon marine rope and use it for tying off snaps instead of taking it off my reel.

Any thoughts?

Jim
It's harder to find, but I can get #18 braided nylon at my local hardware store- look in the section that sells chalk lines. Most of the stuff is twisted, but the braided stuff is out there.

Thanks, Do It Easy. I remember seeing chalk line the last time I was at the hardware store, I'll have another look at it when I go in.

I doubt you will have any trouble, your knots have performed well so far.

The quality of the knot is key. The proper knot, well tied, will perform a long time.

Melting the ends can help, but melting and glue is no substitute for a good knot.

Check this out. I bought a whole spool of it, but it has not come in yet.
