Hello,
Well im brand new and just got open water. Sooo the only thing i know is i want to keep going wow lots o fun,
suppose im going to ask the same question y'all heard thousands of times. I live in kansas not much vis here and am thinking gonna have to travel .
Question is buy or rent equipt
thanks :D

You're pretty well landlocked. If you're not going to do any local diving, it might not be worth it to get all your own equipment. However, I'd suggest getting your own mask and your own fins. Maybe get your own regulator set too. From my experience, renting gear during dive trips isn't too expensive, especially if you're only going on a few trips a year.

If you were regularly diving, though, it would be totally worth it to buy your own equipment. Do the math costs yourself. How many dives would it take for the equipment to pay off itself? How many dives a year do you plan on doing?

I'll bet there are local dive sites, even if they are quarries or lakes. If you own your own gear, it's easy to throw it in the car and go splash in one of those local places, even if it's just to float around and remember what diving feels like. People who dive regularly become better divers and in my opinion, are safer than people who don't. Renting a whole set of gear to get in a pool or quarry is pretty painful; just paying for an air fill makes it a lot more palatable.

There is also the benefit that, when you go on a trip, the gear you are using is gear you KNOW. You know where everything is and how it works, and you know how it's been cared for and whether there are any issues with it. And you can be sure it will fit.

YOU better buy your own mask,a snorkel and fins and if u find some cheapest but reliable bcd with regulator set buy it it will be a worth ...........while if you are not goin for dive trips the mask ,fins and snorkel will help you practice in a nearby pool...........DONT BUY YOUR TANKS>>>>>>>>

Renting is a good way to find out which gear fits you and your need best.
If you decide to do local diving you will want to own your own soon ;)

thanks for replies,i do have mask, snorkel and fins, had to buy for class, was thinking bout bc and reg local diving is murky and oppurtunites limited, however I still want to go, we are heading corpus christi soon (vacation on beach ) and will want to try there. first time i'll try and find some rental i reckon.
thanks

Take your time with the BC. Rent or borrow several different brands and types try them maybe even in the pool and see what suits you the best or you will be like me and have four different BC's. LOL
