Liz... thanks for the update. Glad to see they finally opened their eyes a little.
but any idea what took them so long to finally do something? I mean this has been going on for years....
Yup, first and I'm not making excuses...I have discussed before how things were handled islandwide "in the days of ole'" which was the thieves were brought to the parents by the police and believe me there was ample punishment. This was the way things were done for hundreds of years. I can remember when cops didn't even carry guns here.
Second and most importantly I really think it is a 2 fold reason. One, we grew REALLY fast and the island was not prepared and secondly, a lot, actually the majority of thefts are done by either non-bonaireans, or Bonairean "druggies" who are hired by someone. I know that there was a problem with illegals (which the government has been and is actively address BTW) and they are the ring leaders. Three years ago, they had a big rash of robberies and it was found to be a women from Dominican Republic (I think, not positive), whose fence was in Curacao.
Other "rings" have been busted since, in the same fashion.
Finally we are coming into the 21st century in law enforcement. We are also an island in the mist of great change, for the better I hope, and I think that you will continue to see great strides made in the area of safety on Bonaire.
As a White American Female, to be very honest, I still feel safe walking the streets at night. Yes, I do take precautions, watch where I park, lock my doors at night now, but nothing different than I would do in the states.
