Hello, I am new to scuba diving. I have made one dive post NAUI certification. I purchased a Henderson wet suit on-line but the legs and arms are too long. My local dive shop says they can't help. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can any tailor do the work? I have tried to contact Henderson but can't find a phone number. Thank you for reading this and even more thanks if you can help me. CJ

First, you may want see what Henderson has to offer in different sizes. Not sure what you purchased, but some suit manufactures offer Large/Short, Medium/Short, etc., even if merchants don't always stock the full line of sizes.

You may want to look at some other manufactures if Henderson does not off a size that fits you right.

As a last resort you can get it altered, but it will cost you! Pensacola is not the dive mecca that S. Florida is, but I would be surprised if there is not someone local that alters wetsuits. You can also send it out to places that do alterations, but shipping is more expense.

CJ, Are the end of the arms and legs stitched? Most wetsuits have a blue backed "Hyperstreatch" material to make it easier to get on/off. This material can usually be cut with houshold scissors. If it does not have this "Feature" I'd agree with RonFrank..... Send it back for the right size.

MRXRAY, thank you for taking time to respond. The problem is that I am the wrong size for all the brands I tried. I am an older, short, round woman. The entire suit is hyperstreatch with a small folded over hem for the arms and legs....

Ron, thanks also to you for your info. I guess, it is true, Pensacola is really southern Alabama and not Florida at all. I will call around town or try to cut it down myself..

CJ... do NOT cut down a Hyperstretch (or any other wetsuit) in the arms and legs yourself... You can trim *some* neoprene hood openings, and *some* neoprene gloves, however, if you just cut the arms and legs to length, you'll find they no longer hug your wrists and ankles, and allow *way* too much water to flush through, not to mention that the kneepads *still* won't be centered over your knees.

You have a couple of options: you can find a local wetsuit tailor (just "any" tailor won't do); or you can use a remote wetsuit alteration service. Henderson does this themselves (at a serious cost -- been there). However, there are others as well, such as Express Wetsuit Repair, or Terrapin Wetsuits. (I can't vouch for these services, as I've never used them, however, I have heard from others that have mentioned them as viable).

Does anyone know a wet suit tailor who might be willing to teach the special concerns involved with trimming a wet suit? ...or know of any intructions/tips for folks who want to tailor their own suits?...notes about cutting, piping, specific stitching, etc?
