I’m headed to Coz in few weeks and have bought boat coats for the surface interval. In an effort to save space and weight in my luggage, I’m considering wearing it as my winter coat/boat coat onto the plane. Now, I know I’ll look like an idiot but will the security guys give me a hard time, do you think?

Nope. You'll have to take it off and put it in the bin to be x-ray'd, but no different than any other outer garment.

I heard of someone wearing their BCD as a jacket.

If you add a scythe, you could pass for the Grim Reaper walking around in that. You may want to bungee it to your carry on until you are about to Board the plane.

I know...
but it’s also acting as my winter coat so I actually need to keep it on. I get cold easily.

Wish I could get it in red so it doesn’t look so grim reaper.

I've done it many, many times. Knee length dive coat. Use it as a blanket sitting on the plane while wearing shorts on the way down (usually chilly). If you ever happen to leave behind a good jacket to a Captain or DM you may have a friend for life. I had a friend tell me that rain is always cold no matter how warm it is, just stand in the rain long enough... That may be better than cash to a good Captain or DM as a tip for a great week of diving...

No issue besides a little social awkwardness when flying big name airlines.

How I generally wear such bulky items is:
1. Ticket counter: boldly wear it as a coat and anything that fits in the pockets etc.
2. Just before security. Remove items, carry normally.
3. Pre boarding gate, don the costume again. Had an agent give me a funny look but never any trouble.

There's slightly humorous threads on travel forums where people discuss the unusual clothing they have put on to avoid excess baggage. The airline can not discriminate based on fashion choices.

Besides, a flight is sometimes cold enough I'd be glad for a boat coat.

Cheers!
Cameron

Ps. I may or may not be the guy who wore a wetsuit under a loose fitting shirt and a armadillo sm BCD as a back brace when I miscalculated my carry on dimensions badly when they changed the size restrictions

You know that you aren't likely to encounter blizzard conditions on Cozumel, right? :)
