Water Temp Report Late April 2016

From three thermometers on computers which all agreed...

On south side if Roatan...

A very consistent 82 degrees, at least down to my standard maximum of 70fsw.

In the shallow sand flats it's been up to 89 degrees out in front of CoCoView.


Weather was dry for the week 4/16-23, winds up at night on 17-18th, but otherwise calm. Ensuing nights under a Full Moon were glassy flat.

A mild SE breeze at 6 all week, seas running 1' long swells, very calm. Bugs minimal, possibly because of that SE breeze.

No ZIKA yet, logged 27 dives.

Only two divers on the boat today, they saw a Hammerhead cruising at 40'. Later they noted a pregnant SeaHorse.

Was at Anthony's Key last week (16th-23rd) . Water temps were awesome at 82 like Doc said. Never touched the wetsuit.

It had been a few years since I had dove Roatan and the diving was better than I remembered. In the past we had not seen many turtles, eels, etc. This trips we ran into quite a few turtles, saw spotted eagle rays on two dives, and saw so many big morays that it became no big deal to see another one. Lots were out free swimming the reef.

Was completely blown away when we dove Pablo's Place. I had no idea that Roatan had a reef that spectacular. As nice a dive site as anywhere I have been in the Caribbean.

Roatan is back near the top of my list as the best diving the Caribbean has to offer.

Great to hear, Ash. I hope you guys had a great time and left a bit of Roatan fun for the rest of us. Wife & I are wheels up in less than 3 weeks. Really, really, really (I can say that three times without invoking sticky keys, right?) looking forward to it. It's been a loooong winter.

BDSC, did you dive Texas too?

I'm surprised that you hadn't noticed all the eel action before. That's one of the things that always so impressed me about northside (West End) Roatan. There were always free swimming green morays and various others to be seen as well. we often encountered turtles too. I must get back there to see how things compare now that I've added a few other great Caribbean dive locales to my "resume".

Thanks for the report, Doc! Up to 89F in the shallow sand flats? I may be able to do my first ocean dive in a skin rather than a 5mm wetsuit. We head out that way mid-May.
