I just got my OW certification and my LDS put together this package for me. I got a Sherwood Avid BC, zeagle zx/50d with a yoke attachment, he said I would NOT need the DIN version? Zeagle envoy octo, Sherwood analog navcon gauges, luxfer al80 tank. I'm only going to be doing warm water diving for now. I don't know too much about the different manufacturers of equipment. I hope my LDS wasn't just trying to sell me there equipment that sits on the shelf. I payed over $1500 with tax for this. Any opinions?

Welcome to the board! It would be helpful to fill out your profile and say where you're from.

When you say you will only be doing warm water diving for now - you live someplace warm, or will you be flying to someplace with warm water? As you wouldn't typically travel with tanks. As far as the rest, sounds like fine gear but I don't think he cut you a great deal or anything. For rec diving in the US and many places you might travel, yoke is most common.

I live in Northern Florida. I'll just be diving around florida. I probably won't be flying to dive locations much. I am relieved I didn't get ripped off on the gear though. Thanks for the reply!

If you dive and use the gear, it's not a bad deal... if you don't end up diving then it was a bad deal :(

So DIVE DIVE DIVE :D

Aloha, Tim

P.S. Was the class part of the package? If so then you only paid a couple hundred over what the cheaper online stores would have been - generally speaking that means a good deal from a Local Dive Shop, especially considering the time they spend fitting you in the gear and any "litte" extras you might need like hoses etc.. - that easily makes up the difference - I've seen similar packages from shops that are well over $2000.

That is utter junk! That whole package should cost more than about $795.
Avid BC $269
Zeagle zx/50d $199
Zeagle Octo $69
Sherwood Analog Guages $129
AL 80 Tank $129

It will work for remedial warm water diving... but for $1500 you can do MUCH MUCH better.

Nothing wrong with that AVID, i like mine a lot. The rest is fine stuff. For warm water where you don't need to sink a thick wetsuit I can even tolerate the AL-80.

As they said, if it fits and you dive it frequentlky and confidently you are golden.

Dive safe and often.

OK... I over-reacted a bit. The stuff really isn't junk... but the prices they must be charging for it are insane. Here is what I'd buy for $1500

Scubapro Classic BCD $479
Scubapro M16 S550 $399
Scubapro Twin Jets $189
Scubapro R390 Octo $129
Uwatec 3 Gauge $189
2 AL 80 Tanks $258 (129 each)

$1643.00 or $1514 with just one tank

Better quality gear, more durable, more features and better resale if you decide to get out of the sport

We love AVID also............but we care a ton of other quality products.

We are happy to talk you thru it if you need to chat.

Happy Diving
