The real trick is to drop down at end of the pipe. Theres some lining up you have to do, but assuming you get close, you can drop down, find the end of the pipe (vis helps a ton) and then swing right to the field. Saving all the pipe air. Then you can do a longer swim back along the pipe, or get back in a safer area then surface and spend longer at the fields.

We did the swim to the end of the pipe trick, but vis was about 5 feet and it was overcast. Once we made it out to where the field is though vis opened up to around 25 feet.

Don't get anxious to submerge. If you keep finning out untill you can line up the tip of the breakwater with the large white rock on the point beyond the aquarium, and you in line with Reeside ave. you can drop right on top of the metridiums. Most folks cant wait and submerge too early which is why they typically hit the end of the pipe. But if you resist the urge to go down its worth it.

Ron got us out there by swimming out, lining up and dropping down, which is alot easier although the surface swim can be a bear. However, if you time your gas right, you can actually swim back to shore, which can be really pretty. Saves you a surface swim at the end of your dive.

Im not sure id want to swim out and drop down on the fields. Where we were at least you could hear boats overhead. Granted I dont know exactly how close, I think id rather not find out .

I have never heard boats overhead at the Metridium - although it would be possible I guess. I would just rather not use up my air trying to get to the site. :D

Yea the vis wasnt good enough to know where they were. All I know is it sounded fairly close. Ill take your word for it though, id much rather have more time out there.

With the environment, you are really hard pressed to know where any sound is coming from (really). So, it is best not to be to worried about it - just be mindful of your depth and always (as trained) keep your eyes up when surfacing. That way you won't run into anything. I think the Metridium are close enough to the shore that most boats wouldn't be in that area - at least the pipe is.

Looking forward to hanging out with you all.

Hey

So, im definately in. My regular buddy is going to drop me (i dont have a car so lack of own transport is the main logistical factor stopping me diving more) and all my stuff at breakwater at about 7.45am, then he is going to head off to do a class for his DM. Any chance i can store my extra kit and spare tank in someones car whilst we dive?

I figure ill probably be first there- i can grab us a spot at the tables towards the left side of the beach, next to the ramp.

Looking forward to meeting and diving with you all!
