Thanks. I looked into booking it, and it appears that they go Victoria to Vancouver in the morning and then return in the afternoon. I wish they had another ferry that was running the opposite trip. Right now, I'm thinking the helicopter is the most viable method of doing Victoria in a day.
Or seaplane. They leave Vancouver from about 200 yards from the helijet terminal and arrive in the inner harbour which is right downtown - helijet is slightly further from downtown Victoria. Both work equally as well. Helijet as I recall flies in all weather float planes can get socked in. Not an issue usually in September.
Re museums I would agree nothing much in Vancouver except the ones dlofting suggested. The one in Victoria is definitely worth a trip. On a day trip probably not however. Just wander the inner harbour, up Government street to Johnson and then back along wharf street and the waterfront(old town Victoria) the Empress, the parliament buildings, Beacon Hill Park, maybe walk the breakwater. If you are going to drive anywhere Bucharts Gardens. Lunch and or dinner in any of the restaurants on the harbour. Victoria is the same as Vancouver poor restaurants don’t survive. Just choose the one with a menu and view you like. I like Finn’s for out of town guests. Reserve a window table. It in the middle of the oldest commercial part of Victoria across from Bastion Square. Lots of other choices however.
