​I know that snorkels have been around for a long time in one form or another, but I believe that this 1939 photograph shows one of the earliest modern day snorkels. Not too sure about the mask though.

The snorkel was originally identified and a breathing tube...the term "Snorkel" came much later

The snorkel is an American patented product , named by the French after a Dutch invention used by the Germans in WW11.

Gas mask.

This is the start of Second World War, when gas masks were made available to civilians in the UK just in case the use of poison gas, so popular during WW1, might be revived and this time directed against civilians.
