I am going to Florida next week and want to hunt for shark teeth off of Venice beach. Anybody here got any good advice for me?

I will let youknow how it goes. Come on locals, share some knowledge with a good ol Texas boy!!

PM him. If he is on the board, he will respond! I have dove there twice... too rough the first time (I threw up in the surf) and 0" vis the second time. I think Walter found a ray's tooth on that dive. I aborted both dives.

Try www.floridawestscuba.com I have several friends who've used them and found nice teeth. One of them is a regular on my boat for fossil diving in NE florida so he was jaded. He reported that they were very helpful to the firstimers.Good luck.

Spaz,
Venice is a cool place to visit, I grew up there and now live in the next county south. Florida west scuba would be your best bet, I have never used them but really any place you go near Venice Beach you will find teeth. It's not called the "Sharks Teeth Capital of the World" for nothing. You can actually do a shore dive right from the beach that any LDS could tell you about. I have not been out there myself, I got certified after moving away but would like to go if you have room for another person. Send me a PM and let me know. :D

Wildbill

When are you planning to dive? I'll join you if it's on the weekend. Barnacle will be in the area, Wildbill is nearby, maybe we can put a group together.

My only experience in Venice was on a day that had current so strong, if you let go of the anchor line, you would have been swept away from the boat.

Vis was just inches. My wife aborted while still on the surface. My two sons and I went to the bottom thinking that the current wouldn't be as bad there. Wrong answer.
Next, I thought I'd try to "feel" my way through the sand. Guess what I found out? We have spiny urchins in Florida!

After just a few minutes of that, we decided to abort the dive also. On the way up, I was hoping that my wife wouldn't rub it in too bad. She didn't. Not too bad anyway.

We drove all the way from Naples, got about ten minutes of bottom time and had to drive all the way home to Naples. Maybe it'll be better next time? It couldn't get much worse.:boom:

Walter, Going to First annual TDI Cave Conference on Saturday, Plan on Diving beach on Sunday, and then working my way back North and West over rest of week diving caves. As plans firm up, I will let you know more.

Conditions in Venice range from zero viz to 30 ft. Average is 2' - 6'. Strong currents are rare. You should be comfortable in low viz for this dive.
