I think it is too quick for even the professionals to label him as a paranoid schizophrenic. He might have schitzotype personality disorder, or severely depressed with psychosis... But nothing in his background suggests schitzophrenia.

People can have delusions with many mental illness, but we should not assume that he is schitzophrenic.

From what I've read so far (I haven't seen the videos and won't go out of my way to watch them), I doubt he would have been able to be classified as having anything in the DSM-IV other than major depression. I doubt he was psychotic / schizophrenic / schizoaffective. He might have been schizotypal personality, but i honestly don't understand that one very well -- i thought it was characterized more by a *need for* social isolation rather than *anxiety over* social isolation though...

Unfortunately there's no good objective clinical test for "violent ****ing whackjob" so he was in a psychiatric bucket with a few 10s of millions of other Americans...

I'd be all up for not allowing the sales of guns to anyone with any history of clinical psychiatric conditions... but then I'm up for not allowing the sales of guns to anyone and banning psychiatric conditions would probably be 1/2 the job...

Oh Kim, of course ... behind our keyboards, we can be anything we wish, including porn stars.

yeah, from AP wire:

A medical examination conducted Dec. 14 reported that that Cho's "affect is flat. ... He denies suicidal ideations. He does not acknowledge symptoms of a thought disorder. His insight and judgment are normal."

not overtly paranoid, psychotic, schizophrenic, no magical thinking, etc.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Ahem. Gentlemen, you are straying perilously close yet again...

yea..lets stick to mental illness, thats kosher, right?

he looked like every paranoid schizophrenic I've every seen, they are kind of classic

pych wasn't my gig, but I'll bet he was and it often manifests itself around his age.

so...people that are functional, often suddenly manifest differently somehow as young adults. I think thats one of the hallmarks if I recall, along with the paranoia.

I am not sure he was "evil", I'll settle for ill enough that he needed to be stopped with lethal force. Almost a(n?) euthanasia even...even he realized that on some level.

no, sorry C

i dont think he was paranoid schisophrenic

they are much more "paranoid" than aggressive ... they feel the world is out to get them, and tell everybody about it

i do think this guy had a personality disorder, perhaps narcocistic, which drove him into psychosis

for me, "evil" is really a meaningless word ... it doesn't mean anything, other than the person didn't do "good"

that's not narrow enough for me
