fisherdvm:I think it is too quick for even the professionals to label him as a paranoid schizophrenic. He might have schitzotype personality disorder, or severely depressed with psychosis... But nothing in his background suggests schitzophrenia.
People can have delusions with many mental illness, but we should not assume that he is schitzophrenic.
From what I've read so far (I haven't seen the videos and won't go out of my way to watch them), I doubt he would have been able to be classified as having anything in the DSM-IV other than major depression. I doubt he was psychotic / schizophrenic / schizoaffective. He might have been schizotypal personality, but i honestly don't understand that one very well -- i thought it was characterized more by a *need for* social isolation rather than *anxiety over* social isolation though...
Unfortunately there's no good objective clinical test for "violent ****ing whackjob" so he was in a psychiatric bucket with a few 10s of millions of other Americans...
I'd be all up for not allowing the sales of guns to anyone with any history of clinical psychiatric conditions... but then I'm up for not allowing the sales of guns to anyone and banning psychiatric conditions would probably be 1/2 the job...
