beermunder:
I live here in Pensacola home the the Oriskany. took pics of it the other day.
evrything will be open and accessible, air needs to escape so that the sinking may be accurately carried out. will sit at 212 feet, top island will be at 60 feet if all goes well.
More than likely i will be on a Navy vessel video taping the event.

The permit filed to sink it requires at least 65 feet of clearance to the surface.

I think it'll sink a good bit in the sand eventually also based on weight and currents.

Yep, you're right. You'll find someone out there in their jon boat sitting on their cooler of Coors.

SuPrBuGmAn:
The biggest openings in the ship are through the hangar deck, most of them have "windows" on both ends so it could be used to swim directly through - but they will be sitting below rec-depths.

The main hangar door is wide open, the elevator is removed, so looking around inside the hangar will be be easy with lots of access through the main elevator door as well as 5-6 large schoolbus sized windows.

You're all assuming this puppy lands upright! If it lays down (kind of like the SG), then there won't be any recreational divers at all on this ship. That will mess up a few plans for the local dive ops.

That would really stink. I can't wait to dive it at rec depths, although you can bet the day I turn 18 I'll be getting my deco training started!

Won't be in for long though, unless you're diving doubles. The deck will sit about 130 feet deep. To penetrate the "Hanger deck" from the sides where the plane elevators are, you'll be about 150' deep.

Assuming it will be upright on the bottom! (Spiegel Grove!)

Sorry I just have to keep this thread going. I've been holding off a trip to Florida just because I want to dive her so bad... Any new news?

You're gonna have to wait until next year.

New tentative sinking date is June/July 2006
