Understanding Mica Bay
This paper looks at the history and maritime archaeology of Mica Bay. There are three shipwreck sites and this area was mined prehistorically by Old Copper Culture miners, and this is where the Mica Bay Incident took place in 1849. This was an amphibious assault that resulted in the capture and closure of the Mica Bay mine site and the total destruction of the Hamlet of Mica Bay.
This led to the Robinson Superior Treaty in 1850. With this treaty, the Reserve system was adopted and the government obtained title to the land from the Indigenous. With the movement towards reconciliation, it is time to revisit Mica Bay, this is where it all started. It has been a privilege to have a look at this beautiful and forgotten stretch of Lake Superior coast.
