Thanks to everyone for the advice. We booked a charter with Ninigret divers out of Charlestown. The captain seemed pretty friendly and accomodating (didn't have any problem with my partner and I hanging an oxygen line for a 10 ft stop, unlike some other boats). Now I just hope the weather holds out!

Good luck,
I have heard of them but I have never heard from anyone that has used them. Since I live in southern RI I would be very interested to hear how they are.

Thanks everyone for the advice - we went out with Ninigret divers and were very happy with them. I probably wouldn't try to fit more than four people on the boat though. Two great dives - we penetrated the wreck from the captain's quarters aft all the way to the torpedo room on the first dive and hit the bow on the second dive. One tip I would have for people is that you should study, especially if you plan on penetrating, at information about the U-505 in Chicago. It's the same model U-boat, and memorizing the layout and features helped tremendously. The wreck's in rough shape though - the bow and stern have cracked and partially collapsed, although the conning tower and gun mounts are still in decent shape.

Glad to hear you liked them. I guess I can add them to my charter options for the area.

So far my luck on the U-boat has been pretty bad. I have been cancelled by weather conditions both times I have tried it.

Also in case anyone is intersted, I found out that Narragansett Pier Dive Shop is no longer using that garbage scow that people in this thread were complaining about. Apparrently Charlie made a deal with one of the other local captains who has a brand new boat. Charlie swears up and down that is a great boat and also fast. Of course, Charlie is salesman. Since I haven't seen the boat myself I can't verify his claims personally.

All you people with your needs for "FANCY / MODERN" boats can stay outta the water then. Narragansett Pier dive shop doesn't have a modern boat, but to label a dive shop with such crude mannerism's is just wrong. being from south county RI up till a few months ago, it's convieant for myself and friends to go local.. Help out the local dive shop, and not travel hours to NY.... for a charter. So the boat is old, and it's a lil slow.. More time to go over dive plans, make friends, and "chat".. no wonder they didn't help u over the rail..(though I doubt they didnt' help).. did You bother to ask for help??? Probally talking smack all the way out there.. well u can have ur fancy dive boat, i'm going LOCAL....

I use two other charters who are both based in Rhode Island for diving in and around Block Island. One of them is Ninigret Divers. I agree that Jim runs a first class operation. My other operator is also excellent.

So I guess you're correct. You don't need to go to LI to avoid the garbage scow described above.

Of course, from the description, we may have a new dive site if someone doesn't get their act together and pull some maintenance.
