For recreational Nitrox dives, I use an Oceanic VersaPro. Excellent computer. Large, easy to read numbers. Good for 1 gas. Very liberal computer verses most other computers.

I will agree with the others that a VersaPro or Atmos 2 would be a good choice. Aeris and Oceanic are all produced by Pelagic systems. Their features will be the same for similar models. They included nice little bar graphs for PO2 loading/Nitrogen loading/Ascent rate. The ndl model is more liberal than Suunto or Uwatec, but can be made more conservative with the alarms or just not pushing the limits. You can't make the Suunto more liberal, so you are limited by a very conservative computer. Scubatoys sells almost all of them except Suunto, and they choose not to sell Suunto if that tells you something.

You can get a 2 mix TUSA IQ-700 from Scubatoys for less than a Dive Rite Nitek Plus or a DR NiTek Duo - with a better warranty (2 year instead of 1 year) too.

WWD -

Sorry if I miscommunicated. The place I was dreaming about diving has a VERY short list of computers they recommend on their dives. That was the only reason I mentioned the NiTek, not as an endorsement or bargain. I'm sure there are other reputable deco computers that will do all the required things. Wasn't meaning to kick at Tusa or any other sacred cows.

Markdone,

Sorry if I miscommunicated. We have been working toward a dive trip to Bikini for several years now, and I'm quite familiar with the site you posted the link for. I also have a Dive Rite NiTek3, which is now my redundant 'backup' DC.

The TUSA IQ-700, Dive Rite NiTek Duo, Dive Rite NiTek Plus, Apeks Quantum, Apeks Pulse, and Cressi Sub Archimede are all manufactured by Seiko. They all use a Buhlmann algorithm - in fact, the TUSA and Apeks models use more tissue compartments than the Dive Rite models - check the documentation. Or do a search on the board here - it's no secret.

I will be using the TUSA as primary and NiTek3 as secondary when we go there. I have dives with one on each wrist, and the TUSA is more conservative than the NiTek3 - slightly, but it is more conservative - not less. Just the facts.

There have been some quality issues reported with the Dive Rite NiTek Duo and Apeks Quantum, which is why I expect the Bikini site stated previously they have had 'mixed experiences' with the Dive Rite Nitek Duo model, but no posts of such problems with the TUSA model I'm aware of. Of course, I'm sure you saw that note on the site you posted the link to, about the 'upgraded model' of the Dive Rite NiTek Duo being the one recommended.

Hope this helps clarify. No sacred cows - I like steak. Education can overcome ignorance. Attitudes are another matter. An open mind is helpful. I understand some folks who like crow though - just not my cup of tea. To each his / her / its own.

We also plan on Truk Lagoon - having the tech training before we go is our plan - maybe next year. We have our final meeting with our tech instructor scheduled for next week.

I asked myself this same question a few months ago and after researching the topic I went with the Oceanic Versa Pro with the USB cable from Scubatoys (it's basically the same computer as the Aeris Atmos 2).

This model (Aeris Atmos 2/Versa Pro) also appears to be the most popular computer on scubaboard, and Scubatoys still has a special on it: http://www.scubatoys.com/store/detail.asp?product_id=VersaProWrist . One of my main reasons for getting it was that other computers were considered too conservative by many divers here. Also, I believe scubatoys gives a 10% discount on top of the already special price to scubaboard members if you ask.

Of course, if you have more money to spend then it may be worthwhile to get an air integrated computer, or something more advanced. If you don't mind buying a used computer, then it may be worthwhile to check out ebay or the classifieds section here.

Well, here's a differing opinion. After a great deal of research into decompression models, I opted for the Suunto for the very reason others here don't like it. Its conservative RGBM model.

I would suggest doing some research and decide what model you want before buying a computer. Suuntos are very good and very popular. But so are Aeris and Oceanic.

drdiver1952:
I believe Suunto also uses a Buhlmann (sic?) algorithm.

They use the Suunto RGBM. According to Bruce Weinke's book "Reduced Gradient Bubble Model in Depth", The Suunto computers are an RGBM algorithm. RGBM is an expansion of the Haldane model and I belive it has Buhlmann wrapped up into its package. Although, I have read different explanations from other divers here on the forum.

Hi - I appreciate all the information. I was dreaming about Bikini, and I wish I was as far along as you are in getting there.

I did not mean to steer this so far off the original topic. I like my simple wrist computer, and recommended it based on my personal experience over the last 18 months.

I did not intend to touch nerves, or try to state one machine was superior to another in terms of safety, quality, features or price.

The comment about a cow was wrong and I apologize if it came off too sarcastic.
