I need to buy a BCD. I think I have narrowed my choice down to either a TUSA Platina evolution (BCJ-3850) or a Mares Vector 1000 MRS. Does anybody have any experience of either of these jackets?

The TUSA weight release seems quite stif for both loading and releasing in the shop. I don't know how it will be when wet. I'm sure it would bed in. It does feel quite comfortable.

I shall initially be diving in thailand daily for a few months whilst I do my DM course. I want something robust enough to give me the option of diving back in the UK as well though. I shall not be getting a BP/W at this point in time.

All feedback and suggestions most welcome (except recommendations to get a BP/W ;) )

I don't have any experience with the Mares, but I do have the TUSA, which I have liked for my few dives. I've tried some controlled weight releases, practicing in the pool, and it's pretty easy to use. It does take a good tug, but it comes free easily enough. Better than some I have heard where the velcro gets dirty and the weights fall out, which can be dangrous in its own way.

I have the Mares Vector 1000 MRS and have about 20 dives on it. On one of my first dives with it I accidently knocked the release knob and one of the weight pockets went straight to the bottom. I was lucky and another diver found the missing pocket for me. That's the only problem I've had. It's comfortable and rugged. I like it.

I've been diving the Platina for about four years and I think it's great. There isn't any tank roll or droop at all. It holds the tank VERY securely for only having one tank strap. It is more of a harness set-up than other jacket B.C.'s. You can actually seperate the harness from the bladder, as opposed to other jacket B.C.'s where it's all one piece and the tank droops down and swings from side to side. It has very large, easily accessable pockets. I've worn it with everything from a tee shirt to a dry suit and it has always been very comfortable. I have the older model with the velcro wieght pockets. So far, so good. I dive this B.C. with a lp steel 95 and a 19 c.f. pony all summer and fall off of New Jersey and it been holding up great for four years now. Highly recommend.
