AS one of the reasons I should buy from the LDS, the sales guy told me they take every regulator and tune it after assembling it as an extra that the online sales places don't offer. he said the regs don't perform at their best out of the box and that I will be happier going through them since the reg will perform better after it has been dialed in.

Their price was decent anyway, but is this true? If so, that a nice incentive. If, not ..... well, I don't like dealing with people who try to sell me snake oil.

So, do new regs need to be "tuned"?

Some regs do need little adjustments out of the box. Every reg we sell gets checked for proper IP and cracking pressure. Some second stages like my oceanic swivel octo seem to be very sensitive and needed detuned a little to keep it from freeflowing. As far as not performing at their best I'd have to disagree with that. But again they send out alot of regs. I feel better knowing that when someone walks out of our shop their reg will be at it's best. But some in fact don't need a thing. BUt if they do can you do the adjustment yourself? do you have tools, and IP guage and a magnahelic guage?

I'd say that there is a small fib in there, but I can't say if he knows it was a fib or not.

There are some adjustments that can be made, and different people prefer regs that are tuned in different ways. Most divers probably don't know the difference as long as it's close.

The small fib he told is that online places don't check these adjustments for you. Some do, and some don't. It depends on the particular retailer. Some will not check anything, some will check and not mention it, and some will perform a few tests and include a piece of paper with the test results and settings in the package with your reg.

Wish my LDS checked my IP. I have a Oceanic Delta4 with FDX10 first stage. I noticed leaking from both primary and octo this week. When IP checked at another shop it was 175PSI. This caused a piece to break inside that had to be sent from Oceanic. At least I got backup rig to use in mean time.
