I saw a ton of Pilotfish on the mooring for the Neptune II south of Sakonnet Pt, RI on Sunday. But if you mean the little juvenile tropicals close to shore, not yet.

If i was going to dive in RI looking for tropicals when is the best time of the year for it?

Thank you.

This is the time of year to look for them. And they suddenly appear. In fact I was looking at my log book recently..and I went on a dive many years back on a Friday night and didn't see a single fish (tropical) then two days later, I saw grouper, butterfly, puffer, trunk fish....at the same place.

I believe they are scheduled to come in at thier highest level on the last week of August and the first week of September. What the DEP doesnt tell you is that they have a large boat full of tropicals they dump off the coastline in the NARR. BAY in those periods of time to bring in the tourists and raise revenues.

Saw pilot fish, and a couple of juvenile butterfly fish off kings beach 29 july on a night dive and saw the pilot fish again there 6 aug.

Actually we saw what I think is butterfish on last nights dive tiny little fish with a big stomach. Scott our videographer got some awsome close up footage of squid and we were engulfed in baitfish that were attracted to his bright strobe light.

I've seen Parrotfish at Ft Wetherill in mid-late summer.
