When my wife and I do a boat dive, we'll take her Akona roller duffle.
But seeing as how there are two complete sets of gear in it, and that it stores up under the bench in the area that the two of us occupy, I don't feel that it's an inconsideration for others.

When I go by myself I use a Stahlsac mesh bag.

I should not have taken for granted people would realize I was talking about warm water diving. If you're doing cold water diving from a large boat you might need the big bag. If your rolly thing fits under the seat, who cares about it. This is about LARGE luggage NOT designed to be on dive boats. The hard sided bag you flew on the airplane with should not be your divebag.

If the boat is equipped to stow your large rolly thing below, fine. Just don't take up a seat with it, or leave it in the aisle. Don't even leave your mesh bag in the aisle.

Hear, Hear;) Oops, I have the wrong quote here. Sorry. This was for the quote about buying good equipment as a newbie because you're making a good investment.

OK, sports fans, I'm going diving now.
Y'all have fun and be nice today!

Later . . .

When it fits under the seat where you are sitting and does not prevent another diver to set up his gear, then it's fine. The problem is with some new divers, more experienced divers know better, that think their gear is more important than everyone else's. I think it's rude to take up more space than everyone else. We are using common space and being considerate is all anyone asks. If in doubt ask the Capt, or other more experienced divers.

Key to this is that if 90% of divers use a mesh-type bag, a foldable bag, a bag that fits under their seat, and is not a probelm to other divers, that has to tell you something. Most people are considerate, it's that 10% that think they own your space too that is the problem.

Over here: a small bangka (boat) with max of 5 divers, we just use one to 2 plastic crates and stash every dive gear in there. Bring our dry boxes with our valuables, and bravo! We chat our way to the dive site and just pass along our gears when we're ready to plunge. :)

Personally i've got an Adidas bag that I take with me on boat dives, it just about fits all the gear that I own in it..

Most of my boat dives are from those small 6 pack boats or sometimes an even smaller fisherman's canoe.
Carrying a larger bag in most cases just is not an option.

hey Jam, I don't have the NERVE to post a pic of my bag(s)....the Captains let out audible groans. I think I will take a pic today so I can be controversial....

I think it is worth repeating...

Correct, and your gear bag is just one aspect of this. After reading this thread a couple times, it almost seems like that everyone that is anti-big bag would rather have someone scatter their gear everywhere as long as it arrived on the boat in a mesh bag.

PF, do you immediately judge the person when you see them coming to the boat with a big bag?

Howarde, catherine hehe.
That bag is actually pretty small, I use it as carry-on luggage sometimes.

It holds my wetsuit, booties, reg, soft weights, mask(s), snorkel, maybe my camera + housing and other stuff that I need to dive.
Certification cards, pen, sunscreen, bottled water et cetera.

For reference compared to most mesh bags that i've seen it's actually a bit smaller than them.
