Staying in Cancun, but would love to take a road trip to Coz for some wall diving. When we stopped in Coz in May for a couple of dives, we did shore dives with a guide, Scubatony. Although it was a decent dive as our time was limited - arrived on a cruiseship - we want to dive Palancar reef. Looking for inexpensive way to get to Coz from Cancun and still make it there early enough to catch a dive boat for 2 tank dive. Can anyone help??? BTW, car rentals there are outrageous--Cayman was $135 for the week-shocker, eh??? Help!

You have many options, I'm surprised Cancun Mark hasn't answered you. I'll try and help.
1. Listen to a timeshare presentation and either get a car rental for a day or a scuba package for Coz.
2. Take the local bus for a few pesos, ride with the locals, and stop 50 million times to pick up new passengers.
3. Pay for a dive package with a Cancun dive op, but this will cost you around $130.
It includes van transportation from your hotel, drop off near the ferry, ferry ride r/t, 2 tank dive (usually), lunch, and a ride home.
4. Rent the car for a couple of days or for the week and do somediving in Coz.
I did option 3, and the wall dive was awsome!

You can get a bus to Playa Del Carmen and then take a Ferry over - whole trip will cost you 6.50 for the bus then 8 for hte ferry. Check out this site for more info and other ways.
It doesn't look like the bus leaves early enough (10:30am first bus) but you could always take a car for about $65 each way. Ferry starts at 6am and it's about 45 minutes (or less)

Thanks guys for the input. I'm thinking that a car rental for one day is the best way to go. Dive boat leaves Coz at 10:00 a.m., so buses, ferries, etc. won't cut it. How early should we leave Cancun to get to diveboat before 10:00? Not sure about travel time....better not imbibe too heavily the nite before :dazzler1: - could be a very early morning

Dive boat's leave at all sorts of times. Take the bus. Mexico has many layers of busses. 1st class to chickens. Take first class, few stop, get the ferry and a later boat, lots of folks will take you out at 12, 1 or later.

Rental car in a parking lot in PDC for a day, boy that sounds like a good deal.

Sometimes car rental can be quite a luxury worth paying for.
The cost of airport transfers to the hotels in Mexico sometimes are almost as much as a week's rental. Plus if you have the car for a week you get ultimate freedom of where and when to go, plus you can get AC. But it depends on what you want.

If it helps any, I was there not long ago and had a res with oe of the car companies (just in case).... once you are at the airport you can go to the other car rental companies desks and see who offers you a better deal. I ended up renting a VW Pointer (a bit smaller than a VW Golf) for $108/week with Dollar. They are offsite and their office is in a gas station on the way to Cancun from the airport - you get whatever gas is in it at the time of rental and return it with same amount at the same location. They bring you back in the same car you rented to the airport for your departure flight.

When are you going? We will be in Cancun 10/28-11/4. We will be diving Isla Mujeres, Tulum (Ocean & Cenotes), Puerto Morelos and Cozumel. If you're in town the same time and want to go the same day(s) we go, you're more than welcome to hitch a ride with us. PM me for more.

Looks like we'll miss you. We arrive on Oct. 2 through the 9th, staying at Royal Islander. Interested in finding out what dive op you found on Isla Mujeras. Coral Scuba's e-mails don't go through, but they have a great rate for 3 day dive pkg! We're going with Nautilus for 3 day pkg including transportation from resort to their dive shop for $135 each. Not a bad deal.
Car rentals are nuts there. Booked a car for a week for $106.00-got the confirmation and read the small print. They require 10% of the value of the car as a deposit, which came to $2000.00, along with $15 a day for insurance. Credit Card insurance is not accepted!!!! Holy (*&)(& batman! How bout no??? So, Coz is out of the question..
Any feedback out there on Nautilus?? Found them under Carribean Blue Divers. Will provide link if requested. Really frustrated.... :eyebrow:
