Thoughts on the Garmin Inreach Messenger?

You can send from an InReach either an SMS text or an email, or an email-like message to another InReach (it looks like an email but its unique to the garmin network).

Any of those 3 forms can reply to your InReach message. But your family member cannot initiate a conversation via SMS or email to your InReach. All messages are limited to 160 characters each. It's best to make each message fully stand alone with very clear pronouns if used at all. Sometimes they can be received in a different order than they were sent.

It can send a text to a cell phone via the cell co's sms email server.

You can txt a phone from an InReach
The phone can txt you back, but the phone cannot initiate the conversation. The InReach has no permanent "phone number" to receive a text.

Does the conversation expire? If InReach SMS a friend's phone can that friend still reply a few days later or does the thread die after a set time?

Check out this link. Seems to be a persistent conversation, since they say that once initiated it can’t be blocked. I’m not aware of any time limit.

The MapShare page is another option too.

It certainly works for a few days. A week or month+ I don't know.

Every conversation is assigned a new 10 digit number and you can't text that number from any other phone except the one that received it.

But if your smartphone supports email, you can send an email to an InReach user. Each account has a dedicated email address.

How is the inReach Address Determined?​

An inReach address is automatically assigned and usually determined by the portion of email address used for creating the inReach account prior to the @, also known as the local-part.

• Example: If your email is peanut.butter@chocolate.com, then the inReach Address assigned to the account may end up being peanut.butter@inreach.garmin.com.

In cases where there is already another inReach account using an identical local-part, a number is typically added to the inReach address at the end of the local-part (ie. peanut.butter1@inreach.garmin.com).

Thanks for pointing that out. I stand corrected. It's not clear on the Garmin site.
