And recognizing that this is a SCUBA board, maybe it would be just as well to suspend this "Non-Diving Related Stuff" forum for a while. It really seems to be causing more problem than it is worth right now.

I had been holding out hope that the members here would see the writing on the wall, and knock off the baiting and fighting.

I continued to hold out hope that would happen. However as far as I'm concerned, there are people here that will never grow up and will continue to cause problems wherever they find the opportunity.

I've tried every method I could fathom to keep the peace, and people couldn't grow up. So perhaps an all out killing of the forum is the way to go. I don't hang out here to spend hours policing the NDR forum and cleaning up all of the messes caused by those that can't control themselves. Expecially when the reward for my actions is getting crapped on by those offended by my not letting them drag this board into the gutter.

As a starter of a tread that was "ripped" I agree with the reason. I understand this is a priviate board for the purpose of divers getting together, sharing an intrest and fostering general good will and fun. I say if people have a beef your always welcome to invest the time, money and effort and go start a war/politics board of your own. I glad that KN, LD and the Mods have decided to take measures to perserving the board for what it is ment to be and so many enjoy.

Keep up the good work Mods,

Geek

Maybe instead of shutting down the NDR thread we should shut down the people who abuse it. even if it is a temperary suspention. as we know some will just come back as someone different, but it will send a message as to the edicate of this board. and it will keep those who general are good comunity members and frequant posters from falling into the wrong type of issue, as they may want to keep there board name for reconition.

Is it time to become totally self policing? We could use the "Poll" feature for good for once..."which inflamatory scubaboard member most needs to be removed". EDIT: Please read this as satire...I don't really believe this is the solution, I totally trust the mods to make this kind of decision for us...besides, my poll only had one name on it.

That's an excellent suggestion, AquaTec. We've had some thought-provoking discussions in this forum which now seem to have been excised. It's a shame things had to be determined by the lowest common denominator, instead of severely disciplining a few cretins and leaving the thoughts of the more responsible untouched.

Note to Spectre and other interested parties: what I've written isn't an attack, only a sad observation. I do appreciate what you did in those earlier thread. I haven't been on the board very much lately, so I have no idea how bad things had become prior to the implementation of this new policy.

I wish the software would simply let an admin grant or deny access to certain forums for certain users. Misbehave consistently in a certain forum, lose your access...

Its a tough situation.

Self policing won't really work, b/c for the sake of community and keeping it in line with "family values", we are not allowed to address certain members as they NEED to be addressed.

Which basically leaves the mods a couple of realistic options.

1) Start booting problem children

2) Close the NDR section down

3) Continue to play thread cop and clean up after the damage has essentially been done and the offending thread posted (i.e. the status quo)

I think we've demonstrated that certain people aren't going to knock this off. Now the mods just have to make an executive decision...they solve the problem by shutting down the forum or booting users, or they decide to live with the problem knowing that there is no reason to believe this pattern of behavior is likely to change or to stop.

Some of your have been talking about taking NDR out of action! The whole pursue of this forum and also ScubaHumor was so that members can nagivate through the board more effectively.

Taking away this forum will only force people into posting there NDR threads into Basic Scuba or other forums that have no relation to there topic.

Another reason for the NDR forum is because no matter how many "disturbances" there are, people do make friends here and its a way of getting to know one other outside of scuba discussions and way of sharing moments together (such as Clives baby or SCORE ResQ's truck!)

The last thing anyone wants is really for these to be closed out as they are part of Scubaboard!

As far as blocking access to members for certain forums etc - Scubaboard does not have that capability to ban a user from a forum without banning them from the rest of the board! Any banning people from the board is not the aim - the aim is to give a pleasant place for people to have pleasant discussions!! :)

Throwing out the baby with the bathwater is not addressing the cause of the problem. Much of the stuff in the NDRS is highly entertaining and whiles away hours of boredom in the off-season, though I don't include the threads on the war in this category.

Still, something needs to be done. Flaming away at one another generates more heat than light and make reasoned discussion impossible.

My understanding is that banning is the ultimate sanction of the mods: temporary suspension seems to be a half-way house that could ameliorate the problem, though it would have to be done in a fair way. How about three strikes in the space of a month/two months and you're out for a month/two months/until the war and mop-up operation is over?

Has anyone ever been banned from the board and why? Did it involve defamatory comment or just general 'disorder'?

I would be interested in hearing the answer to this one. Being fairly new to the board I actually assumed there was a system of some sort to deal with out and out troublemakers. I personally feel one quick boot in particular would end most of the nasty stuff.

I think some of you are right... Keep the war and politic stuff elsewhere. Since this has started I've have seen the board go down hill. When I first became a member (which was not long ago) there was a ton of questions being asked and a wealth of information being passed out, which is the main reason I keep coming back. Hopefully soon we can all get back to what this board is all about DIVING.

I do have to admit I was also one who had some input in the war debates which brought out the worst in me. As someone who has served his Country and has many friends still doing so I find it hard not to defend.
