I wrote to Thermo:

I have purchased your Modular Series 8062LH-4000, & 8062RH-4000 Valves. It is my understanding that they will
come 40% Oxygen ready.* I will be using the rig with 100% oxygen in a rebreather unit.* Is any upgrade needed to have the valve O2 ready or would an O2 cleaning from my local dive shop be sufficient.

Many thanks,
Bryan

They responded:

Bryan-

As the hang tag that is included with the valves mentions, the valves are designed for EAN use to 40% oxygen maximum.* That is the maximum amount of oxygen that can be present in the final mix.* They are not approved for 100% oxygen use under any circumstances.

Kindest regards,

Thermo Valves

... I did get some good advice from Dave S. (www.nobubblediving.com) not to fret and just be sure to open the valve slowly to prevent 'dieseling'.

What is the consensus here?

Thanks

Is the money it will cost you to have the valve cleaned worth the loss of a hand or some fingers?

You will have to do that cost justification, also the shop you are going to have fill it if you are not doing it yourself may require that it be cleaned before they fill with it on a tank.

The "No O2" line taken by the manufacturer is probably a case of CYA - they don't want the liability. Definitely get the O2 cleaning - a Floridian member of ScubaBoard almost lost a hand when a non-O2 clean valve combusted while she was turning it on. There's a writeup over on TheDecoStop of the incident.

Thermo valves are very popular - they're probably the valve of choice for many tech divers using them for deco applications, including 100% O2. Unless someone *other* than a party worried about liability raises objections against using them... I don't see a problem.
