Hi Ric,

We met two years ago when you introduced my wife to her long lost Caldwell cousins. We just ordered a copy of your book.

Cheers,

Derek

Hi Derek!

Hope you both enjoy the book. I didn't include a lot about the history of the Coldwells (spelled Caldwell, originally) but have it in reserve for another book I plan to write in the future about the families of Cozumel. I did touch on James Wallace Caldwell's marriage to Ana Anduze and went into some detail about the Anduze family's history in regard to the slave trade and Hacienda Colombia.

For those who are interested, here is a very short version of my investigation of the Caldwell/Coldwells:

One day I was having coffee with Don Nassim Joaquin and I asked him where his wife's maiden name (Coldwell) came from. He repeated an old story about an English pirate, which did not seem to me to be very plausible, so I began to investigate. Starting with the Cozumel Civil Register, I found the entry recording Ana Anduze's marriage to James Wallace Caldwell in 1878 and later the entry announcing the birth of their son, Julio Oscar Coldwell. Oscar Coldwell later built a huge business empire based on the legacy of his grandfather, Juan Bautista Anduze, a Cozumel slave-trader. Oscar's daughter later married Don Nassim Joaquin, who expanded the business even further. Tracing James Wallace Caldwell's family tree back in time, I got as far as 1630. His ancestors included passengers on the Mayflower, as well as an officer who fought in the American Revolutionary war.

When I wrote up the family history and showed it to Don Nassim' son, Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, he was quite surprised, as his family in Cozumel knew virtually nothing about this side of the family's history. I asked him if he wanted me to see if there were any Caldwell/Coldwell descendants in the US, and he said he would very much like to know. More sleuthing turned up a branch of the Caldwell family in the US, who were descended from Dr. Frank Eddy Caldwell, James Wallace Caldwell's brother. Two of those American Caldwells, Derek and his with Peg, then came to Cozumel and we had a nice family reunion with the Cozumel Coldwells (Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, his sister, Addy, nephew Nacho, niece Rosy, and sons Pedro and Nassim, and all their spouses and children)

You never know where a little research will lead you!

I returned this book as it had way too much minutiae that I'm not interested in.

A history book with too much detail? What an odd thing to say.

I do have a lovely coffee table book of Cozumel. Mostly pictures, few words....

Available on Amazon too.

Minuscule detail of the subject was exactly what I expected based on the authors detail posts on scubaboard! No one could accuse him of not being detail oriented.

Dr. Frank Eddy Caldwell, James Wallace Caldwell's brother.
This one? Born in New York in 1858, buried in Salt Lake City in 1934

Well, her tombstone shows her name to be Corinth Nancy rather than Nancy Corinth, but it also shows her born in 1923. Sad, but tombstones are often wrong - and then what? Gives new meaning to the phrase "Written in stone." I see her ancestors going back to Nehemiah Sylvester, 1714-1787. Some sources spell their surname: Silvester. Often interchangeable. There are only about 1,000 known Coldwells buried in the US, a couple hundred more known overseas. None known in Mexico on that site anyway. A married couple named Caldwell who both died in 1971, buried in Cuernavaca - but that site has sparse records for Mexico.

Ok, I looked a little further. I cannot find anything on James Wallace, but Frank Eddy seems to have had two sons.

Married to Stella M. Caldwell. May have children? Both are buried in Tennessee.
