This one had a happy ending and it is slightly humorous, but I thought I would share it.

Minnesota Ice Fishermen Catch Scuba Diver on Lake

Jason Mechtel and Jeff Klein went out on Lake Waconia in Minnesota to try and lure a monster muskie, but they quickly got a shock, MyFoxTwinCities reported.

“I mean, it didn’t take two seconds and this rattle reel went off,” said Klein.

Soon, every line was going crazy. The pair thought they had a monster fish pulling their lines out until they looked down.

“I literally almost had a heart attack,” said Klein.

A hand broke the surface of the water.

“I didn’t know what to do -- if I should shake it, or what,” said Mechtel.

A scuba diver whose safety line got snagged began sending rope up to them, and soon, they found their hook.

They removed the hook and sent the line back down, and were given a thumbs up by their aquatic acquaintance.

It turned out that three divers had gone into a hole just a short distance from where the two men were fishing, and had placed a flag indicating that they were down -- but the two fishermen had never seen one before and didn’t know what it meant.

The diver later came by to apologize and offered a couple beers as a peace offering,

Thanks for the post. Pretty funny in retrospect.
More reason to put wording on your dive flags, I believe.
I think in general most people have no idea that a dive flag even exists.

How funny. That's going to be re-told for a LONG time.

This is the second placed team in our anchor finding competition. Maybe we are putting too much pressure on them :D

when we go ice diving it is a lot like real estate, location location location! A lot of these spots are frequented by fishermen, who inadvertently lose things down the hole or over the side of the boat . When we are fishing these hotspots we have taken it a step further, we walk the radius with the safety line in hand placing these signs at key locations. Anytime we hear an auger fire up we always look out the window to make sure they are outside of the radius. The big danger being a fisherman snagging your safety line, pulling it up the hole and cutting it to remove the entanglement.

I have always thought it would be a good practical joke to play on someone, have someone top side in on it with the camera filming what is going on. A rebreather would be ideal is to eliminate the bubbles. That might even win $100,000

A couple of years ago some fishermen who were ice fishing near where we were diving "caught" a package of Mrs. Paul's frozen fish sticks on their line. It was downright hilarious!

With over 10,000 lakes here in Minnesota, this is just one of the many services our scuba diving community can offer to make the winters a little more enjoyable for our angling friends out there.

Great story. Thanks for posting.

Maybe the fishermen should buy the divers some spearguns and they could all split the bounty! :D

I'm not sure who should have been buying the beers for who!
I've been diving at a local spot in the river and found longlines laid out and wanted to stick various amusing things on the hooks....any suggestions?

Glad he hooked the line and not the dry suit...
