Sounds to me like you need a new buddy who is not an insensitive clod!
I was worried when I started diving that everyone would be like a swimsuit model. Nice thing about diving is that everyone come in all shapes and sizes, men and women!
Make sure you get healthy and fit for yourself and your health and not to avoid someone's comments! I still remember when I was younger and thinner (before my thyroid disease), someone telling me I was huge as a size 7. What would think now? I could care less!
I like diving and if someone doesn't like my "wide load" in the back , they don't have to look at me or they can swim ahead!

glad to see all this good advice on here :)
I myself lost a bit of weight a few years ago (65lbs) to avoid getting another herniated disc and leaning to dive was sort of a reward for that. And WHAT you eat only affects how healthy you are. How MUCH you eat affects your weight. If you eat 1000 calories of chocolate it's still just 1000 calories. But you'll end up being VERY hungry. If you eat 1000 calories of veggies, you'll be stuffed, but probably unhappy. Finding the balance is where it's at.

Burn more than you consume.

It's the ONLY way. If you consume more, burn more - find out how many calories/hour a particular exercise burns for your weight and calculate how much you can eat - don't forget to include what you burn just by living and breathing :)

All that said, it doesn't matter one bit what you look like on a dive boat. The boys are all just happy to see girls there - no matter what you look like :)

Some "food" for thought when diving:

Eat a banana before your dive--the potassium will help prevent leg/foot cramps. No matter how much you work out, unless you are swimming using fins, your feet/calves will be worked in a different way and the potassium helps.

Eat pretzels or crackers on the boat not peanuts or anything greasy or oily, if you are even the slightest bit prone to seasickness. Skip the greasy burger or McMuffin before getting on the boat too. Grease helps ease the food going down and coming up too!

Hydration! Drink lots. Eat juicy fruits between dives.

Don't drink and dive.

(These hints are for Kate Moss too!)
