I received this e-mail from a friend who frequents the bridge this evening. Just wanted to share, and urge you all to "BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!"

Hi divers,
I'm writing to everyone I know who dives at PFP about what could have been a terrible tragedy at the park today. Catherine, a member of our 4-person dive team was struck by a boat during our dive today. Fortunately, she seems to be ok.
I almost got nailed too, but I was able to get belly down in the sand just in the nick of time. As I did this, I was watching Kay and the prop of the boat literally came within one foot of her head. Tom was carrying a highly visible float ---the kind with the yellow inflatable ring that says 'Diver Below' and has a dive flag sticking out of the top. The four members of our team were each within 10 - 20 ft. of one another.
Do you want to know what the kicker of the whole story is? The boat that struck Catherine was a Sheriff's Marine Unit boat. It seems like the boat was moving pretty rapidly when it went over our heads. To make a bad situation worse, when the Sheriff's Dept. sergeant was summoned, she did everything in her power to try to absolve the officer that hit Catherine, saying that Catherine hit his boat. She further tried to imply that we were in the boating channel which is an outright lie!

The point of this message is simply to warn you guys to be extra careful at the park and not to be lured into a false sense of security just because you're carrying a dive flag. You probably know this already...but I feel like I have to say something because it comes as a big shock to me that the sheriffs don't even seem to care about the laws to protect divers. Please be safe! Robyn

OMG Joyce, that is HORRID. Can you please find out exactly where this took place?

WOW... Yet, I am not surprised by the attitude of the Sheriff's dept. Seen enough propwash from below to know the dangers...

Scary. But from what I saw a on August 14 when we were there, I would not be surprised. There were motor boats coming into the area where divers enter the water and ignoring the dive flags. There were Marine Patrol boats out there when it happened and they did nothing.

As an often used "safe" dive site for training, this accident adds another major worry to every instructor overseeing the safety of students.

VERY good point re:student safety!

I was there that day too and heard several boats nearby while diving in the anchorage area. We are going again today!! Will be toting that flag/target!!

The Sheriff's Dept and other law enforcement should make it policy to avoid the area for an hour before and after hi tide unless there are overriding concerns.

Maybe Force E or someone that lives near the area could set up a meeting with the Marine Patrol and/or other Law Enforcement agencies that patrol the area and voice their concerns about boater and diver safety. You would think that law Enforcement would welcome such an exchange.

Great idea Dennis! I just don't understand why law enforcement officials seem to think that they're above the law, that those rules don't apply to them?

Hit the sand & start digging to China! But seriously I know the diver & met her friends & talked with them the next day. They showed me where they were & it wasn't in the channel. To make matters worse my dive buddy & I were the last of the divers out & as we were chilling a sheriffs boat pulled into the swim area with its blue lights on right up to the lifeguard stand. The lifeguard went out to greet it & it didn't look like it was in regard to anything urgent. After my flag was stolen by a boater I try harder to stay close to it as no longer is 10-15ft a safe distance- Gee for that matter directly overhead doesn't seem to help that much either.
PS What is with all the pole spears & spearguns I have been seeing lately at the bridge & I don't think they are hunting lionfish! Is that legal?
