Sportxlh, I wonder if your batfish could be of the polka-dot variety? I notice it has a spotted pattern on its back fins, just like the one in the Humann/DeLoach guide. The lips and eye look about right as well. What do you guys think?

For sure it is an older specimen--I wonder how long they live?

I took a look at some of the other pictures I took and the batfish had a line of spots or polka-dots running down the sides of its back: more or less where the fins attach to the body. so you might be right about the ID.
 
And so it's a rare find! Congrats!
 
Camera was acting up this weekend. I had no view screen and no view of the subject of the settings the camera was in.

I wonder which one our juvenile shortnosed batfish is going to grow up to be?

Either way, that's a face only a mother could love!
 
We saw a really little batfish last saturday as well, it was maybe 3-4" total length.
